I have a 93 f150, 5.0, 3:55. I am planning to buy an f150 from about 01 to 05. I pull a camper that weighs 40 to 45 hundred pounds. would there be a large difference between the 4.6 and the 5.4 motors? I plan on buying a 2WD crewcab, so the truck would be heavier than my 93 extended cab. Also, is any one year better than the other?
Thanks for any info.
The 5.4 will tow better than the 4.6. It just has more HP and torque (at a lower rpm as well). The 4.6 is a decent motor for light towing though, and at 4500 lbs, you are just above 1/2 the tow capacity.
There is not much of a MPG difference, so don't let that affect your choice.
I have pulled the same 5000 lb travel trailer with my '02 supercrew with the 5.4 and my brother-in-laws '03 supercrew with the 4.6 (both 3.55 gears). While the 4.6 towed well, the 5.4 did it with much less effort. He was riding with me in mine while towing and mentioned that my truck seemed to pull it much better as well.
In '04 they went to a new engine with the 5.4, it is a 3 valve design.
More power than the older 2 valve, but also has problems with the phasers (controls the variable valve timing), oil pump, chain guides as well as problems with the 2 piece spark plugs breaking.
I personally would stay away from the 3v 5.4 unless you know for sure the condition of the engine.
