I am looking to purchase a used supercrew and i am wondering about which engine is better. I like power but the 4.6 is much easier to find, can anyone tell me if its worth buying the 4.6 instead of the 5.4 and which is better?
If you look in this forum, you will find, (at least I have), that there are more issues with the 5.4 although it is the more powerful engine. Its kind of a give and take. 5.4 has better performance, but it seems the 4.6 is more reliable.
Alot is determined by what you are going to use the truck for? daily hauling and towing, or just a daily driver with little towing.
4.6 is ok if you aren't towing much or dont mind the significantly lower power. The 5.4 gives you about the same mpg, higher towing capacity and much better performance. also higher resale value. 4.6 is still a good engine.
I wouldn't say there are "more" issues with the 5.4, with the spark plug exception. It only appears like more because there are more 5.4's out there than 4.6's.
Personally, I went through the same thing. But after looking at MPG differences (not much), I went with a 5.4. I do tow a pop up tent camper and that camper is the main reason I upgraded from my old '89 F150 w/ 5.0 liter. Not that I needed the extra HP all that bad, but it will be nice.
So if you tow at all, the 5.4 is definetly the winner. If you don't tow, just look for the best deal.
