Looking for some insight. So I lift my front driver side tire and spin it and I hear a clicking noise. My first thought was bad wheel bearing. So I removed the wheel to investigate some more. I pulled the locking hub actuator out and spun it. Ding. Clicking sound. I played with it some and it would then lock in. I had to jam it to get it free again. But the clicking sound was still there.
so neither hubs work on the pneumatic system. One of these days I was going to get some manual lockers. But do you think this can cause a problem? Should I get them now?
Second question involves chasing a vibration at 70mph. I was looking at the front u joints. What are the caps on the out side of the knuckle? Do they remove?
I had my tires balanced and rotated. Didn't seem to change much. I replaced my drive line u-joints.
If I drop the truck into neutral the vibration does not go away.
So any thoughts?
Thanks
Front u joint.
did you just buy the truck? or was it driven often? because if it sat it might have created gunk within the torqconverter or trans that is throwing it slightly off balance on certain gears since you mentions the vibrations go away when put into neutral
I had a clicking sound once as you describe....hub locks were not disengaging all the way as they should.
If my memory serves the cause was that the PO or his mechanic botched a hub or ball joint install. A washer was missing. I think the one behind hub and in front of axle.
It could be the axle was not seated to correct depth, or it could be someone took the locking hub appart and did not put it back togather right.
It could be the nylon washers that are behind the axle c clip are worn.
Most likely is your hubs needed to be inspected as I bet they are put togather wrong.
I love my ESOF, even though it's high maintenance, but there are factory and aftermarket manual hub locks that look just like the OEM factory ESOF hubs if your converting.

If you are talking about the caps on the axle yoke then those are the u-joint caps. They have to beaten or pressed out.
The only things I can think of as being a 'cap' on the knuckle would be the inner seal that is pressed onto the stub shaft or the axle tube seal (that usually breaks off and hangs on the axle). In any case you have to start pulling things apart to get anything off.
As for the vibration it could be lots of things and I wouldn't want to speculate.
