im sorry to be posting this for my first post, I got a truck today and am happy with it overall. 2001 xlt 255,000km, green. It's in good shape, barely any rust and only one nick of rust on fender which is good for northwest Canada for an old truck.
i didn't notice this before I bought it but the numbers on odometer were crooked a little, when I tapped it, they line up. The truck is in decent shape, but it could be a 355,000km truck just as easily. He did t have service records either. How common is this for someone to knock 100,000km off and how can I find out if this is the case?? Thanks
I ran a car fax and the guy was honest about being second owner and when and where he bought it matches. I will look into that, honestly it seems like a great truck regardless of miles so I'll try to not stress myself out.
I was looking at a 2001 F250 before I bought my 2003. It was advertised with 170k miles, but a few things looked out of place so I ran a VIN check and it had been in an accident and it actually had 270k on the odometer.
Yea this one hasn't been in any accidents like the guy said, verified by car fax. The thing is I guess the previous owner may have done it. It looks like one owner had it 2001-2010, then went to a dealer for 5 days and a new owner (guy I bought from) has had it since. He seemed like a good guy but you never know with Craigslist. Only thing is 100,000km would affect the price by a few thousand. He literally hasn't replaced anything on this truck, other than transmission 7 years ago and oil changes. If it was 355,000 I would think some parts would of gone by now, maybe not??
This is something I need to know because I wouldn't feel right if I ever wanted to sell it if it has been tampered.
maybe a Ford dealer will be able to help or find the dealer who sold it in 2010, I donno.
I'm not sure how things work in BC, but every time the vehicle gets a smog check here in California, the mileage is updated with the DMV, same as when it's sold and purchased. That generally makes it pretty easy to spot when an odometer roll back occurred.
In BC there is nothing strict like that, mileage gets written by the buyer or seller on your bill of sale for private transactions but I actually don't think our DMV keeps records of mileage. i know what day he bought the car in 2010 and what city, there is about a dozen dealers here. I emailed everyone of them with info and vin asking if they have records. If I find out he messed with it, it should be pretty easy to prove it was him since he's the second owner. I can imagine I wouldn't get much help legally but all I could do is hope he would make good and give back some money or take it back, which is highly doubtful. But he does have a family and I know where he lives, so he doesn't seem like that type, but a little procedure to make a few extra grand I'm sure is tempting to some people. There's a lot of dirtbags out there, I don't know how anyone could live with themselves, I could never sell it to anyone without disclosing such things.
We used to have a smog check (air care) and they would record mileage, but that has been gone a couple years now in BC. Ot has been a while since I pulled a carfax but it may show that record on there from the annual aircare.
Yea I don't see why he would leave it crooked, when a flick sets it right. It looks like the guy runs or ran a business so explains why service receipts aren't there. I just got it oil changed and I file my receipt in my folders.
I paid for a car proof since car fax didn't show much. Car proof shows one service record from a Ford dealership 3 years ago. 207,000km, so 255,000 checks out about right at 15-16,000km per year for a truck driven around the city where the guy is previous owner is from.
Thats what I get from watching one of powerstrokehelps videos where he says if the numbers are crooked and they line up when you tap the dash, someone messed with it.
