Transmission Issues - 5R110

Hello,

I have a 2005 Ford 6.0L Diesel with the 5R110 transmission.

About a month ago, i started seeing some strange shifting issues with the transmission. While driving normally, it would suddenly hard shift (slam itself into gear), the entire truck would shake it shifted so hard. It would also cause the Tow/Haul indicator to start blinking. (my understanding is that the Tow/Haul light indicates an error code).

I drained/flushed the transmission, installed the larger pan/with the improved filter. I put Mercon LV back into the transmission (no idea what type of fluid was in there before).

The problem still persists, and got a bit worse. The truck is almost un driveable at this point. Still getting Tow/Haul flashing messages.

Have you guys seen this before ? Can the error code be read by an standard ODB2 reader ?

Thanks in advance!!

I think you will need an advanced diagnostic software with the ford package to read the transmission codes.

The dealer will have the most advanced software and access to more sensor data

Get an ELM OBD II adaptor and down load ForScan to a laptop. It will read the codes you need. Without out the codes it's just a guessing game that will cost a bunch of money.
And to add since you own a 6.0 you need some way to monitor the engine to stop potential problems before they happen.

Thanks Fiznuka!

I was able to read the codes :

TCM : Transmission Control Module

P2703 - Transmission Friction Element D Apply Time Range or Performance
Module : Transmission Control Module

PCM Powertrain Control Module

P0480-60 Cooling Fan 1 control circuit malfunction
Module : Powertrain Control Module

P0528 - Cooling Fan Speed Sensor No signal
Module : Powertrain Control Module

Im guessing the PCM errors arent related to the transmission, but probably something I need to fix ?

P2703 indicates that the direct clutch took too long to apply during a shift. Direct is also used in reverse. Is the reverse engagement delayed?

Sometimes this occurs from contaminated fluid. I see that you changed what's in the pan and added the good filter. I've actually fixed two that did this by letting them idle in park for about two hours. This lets the new filter get the particles out of the fluid that are causing problems. I think it's worth a shot.

One thing I neglected to mention. When I first bought the truck, about 6 months ago, I took it to a diesel mechanic who supposedly specialized in Ford diesel trucks. He told me the transmission was shifting "funny", so he reprogrammed all of the shift points.

I did some research, and read that you can "erase" everything the transmission control module learns by disconnecting the batteries. I did that today, and, after about a 30 minute drive, im no longer seeing the issue. I wonder if this "reprograming" of the transmission caused this problem....

Time will tell

As far as the PCM cooling fans, should I look into that further ?

Yes, you should. That means that the engine cooling fan isn't operating properly.

Later TSB releases from Ford advise you to use Mercon LV.

Either MERCON SP or MERCON LV are fine.

Ok, wondering if you guys can help here again.

So, as I stated before, I unplugged both batteries, which, to my knowledge erases everything the Transmission Control Module has "learned". After I did this, the truck started shifting just fine. This lasted about 2 weeks. I even took the truck on a long trip (400 miles), with no issues.

Now, as of yesterday, it has started slamming into gear again. Same symptoms as before. Usually happens at low speed after a stop as I am getting up to speed. While the truck is accelerating, it slams into a lower gear very hard. The truck actually shakes, and it feels like I left the transmission on the road.

No error codes.

I have already hot flushed and replaced the fluid with Mercon LV. I also replaced the pan with the 08 version, and installed the better filter.

Any ideas ?

My guess is that you have a sticky solenoid. As to which one I'd have to know which shift has the problem.

the timeline of events just hit me:
my transmission didn't start shifting hard into Reverse/Drive until after my repair (changing TFT; hence also changing 10qts of fluid). I installed Mercon SP (which was hard to find).
(Reminder: changing the TFT immediately fixed my issue; which was that it wouldn't shift above 3rd, and it shifted extremely hard from 1 to 2 and from 2 to 3. Like, shotgun hard)

Is there a chance that SP vs LV caused my issue Mark?

Thanks for the quick reply Mark!

It seems to be happening between 2nd and 3rd.

Would it make sense to just replace all of the Solenoids ? Or is it cost prohibitive ?

Do you think the temp sensor would have anything to do with it ?

Thanks!!
