Broken steering damper

I walked by my Excursion yesterday and noticed something hanging down. I had just towed the camper less than 20 miles this past weekend and I don't remember hitting anything. That is for sure cause my wife would let me know. Anyway, It could not have more than 15k mi on it. The scratch on it looks like it is fresh and com one of the bolts

Ordered a replacement from Amazon, it will be here tomorrow. I could not really tell it was disconnected, even with the camper at 65.

The mount on the tie rod was likely just a smidge to far away for the length of that new damper which caused the rubber bushing to get stretched when you turned full lock to the drivers side. The rubber disintegrated and without a capture washer the end fell off the bolt.

Then it probably happened with the tight turn backing the camper into our driveway.

What is the best way to adjust the mount so I don't do it again with the new one?

Turn hard left then right while observing the damper, adjust the mount so that it doesn't quite bottom or top out.

that dampner seems rather small for a rig like an excursion that size looks like its from or meant for a smaller truck like a half/qaurter ton.

It was a little bigger than the Ford one I took off. But I am not sure if that was the original either. The broken one came from rock auto. I don't remember the brand, maybe a Monroe.
