Well im sure you're tired of all my posts but one more issue. As you know I just reinstalled the engine and got her running. I installed a new 6.4 starter (reman) and she spins perfect. I was experiencing this same issue prior to startup and thought it was weak batteries. The key will just click the solenoid and it turn the engine over.
Quick synopsis of what I've checked:
All grounds
All cables tight
Batteries are fully charged
Power at right fender pigtail leading to solenoid when key is engaged (tomorrow I'll ck voltage at work today)
Checked starter connections
Checked continuity on the 10g wire from the fender to the starter...all good even wiggled it hoping it might have broken internally
To me it sounds like a bad connection but I did not mess with the harness (firewall) aside from bungeeing out of the way vertically. I can hook up a charger and she will crank with the key. I can disconnect the fender 10g and crank it from the battery with no issues.
Ive quadruple checked for loose connections. Didn't have this issue before so not sure what happened.
Shifter I tried but only made sure it was in park....I'll ck that more in the am. The box you speak of... in the cab or under the hood next to the ficm relay?
Thank you
Joe
Now I'm thinking since we had to jack the tranny up to support it on 2x4's across the leaf springs when I yanked the motor...... of that moved the shift cable a bit. Great idea
I just racked my head thinking "what did I forget?" after putting the motor back in. The harness at the firewall doesn't get dc'd and there is only the front grounds and the cab to engine ground....and obviously the injector harness ground onto the manifold.
I doubt the brand new starter is the issue but I have seen weirder stuff.
Ok finally got the truck on the road. Turned out to the starter solenoid had an issue.
She runs so nice and smooth. It is a big difference with the 175/30's and my EGT's. Charlie's turbo cleans them up after 2500 rpm but my EGT's are much higher than ever.....understandably from the full fuel program from Gearhead.
I will say the 6.4 starter iS FRIGGIN AWESOME! Turns over so fast.
I thought it was, but I said that in another forum as I reread this one. I will never buy a reman starter from the Autozone/Advance/NAPA/etc again.
When I tested the starters the 6.4 starter does pull more amps despite what was said on the org, so just be aware of that. You don't have the real cold temps where you are so you won't see as deep of a voltage drop with it.

I saw a chart on amps and rpm's comparing the 6.4 & 6.0 starter.
Forget what's what but even if it pulls harder its spinning half the time. So its a win win in that way.
I agree with the rebuilds, there are so many 6.4 trucks in the bone yard now that you can buy low mile starters easy off ebay.
The 6.4 starter is a big deal, I bump the key and it fires right up.
It doesn't matter if it's spinning half the time unless the batteries are that compromised as it's not total wattage but peak amps. The higher draw does drop voltage lower so if the FICM has a critical voltage, and we know it does based on Ford update CEL parameters, then in certain conditions it will matter. But it would have to be reduced capacity of the batteries, poor connections within the starting cables, and very cold weather where the current demands are higher due to torque needed to spin the cold motor, and of course the equally compromised cold batteries with slower chemical reaction to provide current.
You guys in CA in normal situations won't have that unless your visiting snow country.
For the guy who jumps the faster starter bandwagon, but doesn't keep up on batteries and their cables, there's a potential. DieHard Platinums, you don't have a worry.

Thank you guys for the help.

The starter mod is one of the best I did to the kids truck. Pops her off in one second most of the time.
When I get parts like starters and alternators they get tested
at the store. New and rebuild units both and the last time
I got something it took two tries to find one that was in fact good.
I learned that lesson a long time ago from a friend that happened
to be a very good old time parts guy.
