got the door and window regulators out today. Would it be better to media blast them or soak in evaporust? I am afraid evaporust would get into the bearings but have the same fear over the sand?
I would scrap off the old gunky grease on the window regulators then take a wire wheel to them.
I used motor oil to lube them.
Do the shafts have a lot of play?
I tightened the shafts on mine by swaging the shaft support.
Took a piece of galvanized pipe (1/2" ID I think) I had and chamfered one end.Placed the pipe over the shafts with the opposite end supported and hit with a hammer a few times.
This tightened the shafts up.
I ended up buying rebuilt door regulators from Mid Fifties because of broken springs.
Since they are not going to be visible I would do as Dave suggests, just use a wire brush or wheel. Then on the parts that have rust I would just use Eastwood Rust Converter in the plastic bottle. It is an easy cleanup with water. Let it dry overnight then you can paint it with black or silver rustoleum if you wish. No UV will get to the part so a topcoat would be optional.
