If I can't hear it run, I'm assuming it needs a motor. That's WAY too much of a risk, especially with the problematic 6.0, to even think about spending that much money on.
I would also pass on it if you plan to make it a project. Start with a solid, rust-free truck. There are a lot of them out there.
It will be easier to do the diesel conversion when starting with a diesel vehicle.
Not true as you use NOTHING from the engine wise from the donor except for the transmission, radiator and IC if desired. Nothing else. IC runs $200 and a radiator is cheap too. You could even buy a 5.4 4x4, would not matter except the transmission.
It's an '03 Limited with 160000 miles on it. The rest of it looks like it's in good shape. The other bad news is the fluids looked good but they did not let us start it.
you should walk away. I wouldnt even touch it for 1/2 that price without hearing run
6.0 either lifts heads due to oil cooler clogged...or it's plagued by stc/dummy plug fittings that cause starting issues
That's kinda what I'm thinking, but the not being able start it is the auction policy, it's not vehicle specific. Originally I was trying to find a mint gasser with a blown motor, but all the ones I've found are garbage. I'm guessing if they're mint, whoever owns it just puts in a new motor and moves on. So guess I'm back to looking for Craigslist deals around me. Seems like $5000 is about what it's going to take for something in good condition
Well I'm not going to bid on it so if anyone is interested it's at the IAA auction in Des Moines and it bids tomorrow. Before I had the inspection done (there wasn't time last time), I bid on it last week and had the high bid at $5000 and they countered at $6000, so I'm guessing someone could get it between the two plus fees. Inspection scared me off, especially since I have shipping as well. I can send anyone the full inspection if they want to.
Run away man - a 6.0 that you can't run and assess and the rust will turn into regret. I picked my '05 up for $10K because it was super clean and I still spent almost another 10k getting it how I want it - I'll look for a pic of the underside, you can eat off of it now. Not a spec of rust anywhere.
There are many more that you can find in much better shape for the right $$$ than this, IMO. I am not handy enough to cut/weld/paint etc. and I was not wanting to pay $$$ to deal with it either when I started looking for an EX in early 2016. Took me ~10 - 11 months before I found one that 'talked' to me when I met it the first time and I bought my Ex in Dec last year. Mine has lived in VA and PA all its life, but the previous owners were meticulous in their care. No rust was one of the biggest reasons for me to buy mine. Next season, I want to save enough $$ to have a shop do a full cab off inspection and rust proof spray on the underbody.
IMHO, it is not worth your time and money chasing all that rust. If the Ex is what you want to get, I'd suggest waiting and searching for the one that 'talks' to you. Otherwise, walk away and find another one.
