Hey all. I'm looking for an Excursion for my expanding family and I found one at an auction and wondered if you guys thought that the amount of rust underneath is too much. This one is a 6.0 which I wasn't looking for originally but I think I can get it home for about $6500. Body and interior are in pretty good shape. My longterm plan is to put a 12v cummins in and drive it forever (400,000 miles or so) so I want to make sure to start well. My second more philosophical question is it worth a little extra money to get the 6.0 with some diesel parts already and the 5r110 or should I only be looking for the gassers to put that extra money into more goodies and deal with the 4r100? Thanks in advance.

Reason: Title
That's a lot of rust and I think the rust will turn into a regret. Unless you're able to work on it yourself. I was in the same boat as you and I decided to tackle on the rust monster because of the good deal I got.
Why would you use a rotten core on a project you intend to keep for many years. Rust aside that is way to much money for a 6.0 auction vehicle. $2500 would be my tops and that would just be so I had the transmission.
You can get a gasser pretty cheap if you look long and hard. Huh huh huh... I said long and hard. I've seen them pretty cheap in this area anyway. If you're gonna scrap the heart anyway I'd look for a good cheap Southern truck... Just my opinion.
All the important parts (frame) on have skim coating of surface rust. The rockers do have rust...but you can knock that down with an angle grinder. eBay has replacement panels for $50. pretty easy to prep/stop the rust and then cover that section. or replace if you have a welder.
for $6500 I'd grab it personally. need more details on age and mileage and trim level vs. overall condition obviously.
here is some rust for ya. 2000 X that's lived in Salty Connecticut it's whole life and was a former Fire Marshal Response rig. Luckily Ford uses some thick metal, so it's all ugly but still structurally sound. You should see the Jeep and Chevy frames of trucks up here...freakin' scary
*disclaimer...I did replace those leaf springs and shackles because they scared me
that's not rust...not even close lol

If he was just going to drive it as is, not a problem. But he is going to spend at least 10-20K or MORE doing a conversion on it.
Why start with something sketchy when you can buy a nice rust free southern truck in gas for the same money or close?
The labor to fix that will outweigh ANY savings that might be perceived on the initial purchase. Plus what pops out next?
true...but so many people say stuff like "Cummins Conversion"...but maybe 1% even follow through
The substructure on that X isn't rusted. That's just surface rust. And unless he finds more body panels with more rust, I'd say he's getting a good deal for small amount of body rust.
Especially with a PSD and the 5R110 trans. I love my V-10...love it, but it's hard getting into a PSD for decent price. For $6500 that X looks like it could be a steal. Cleaned up odds are it would be $8-10k easy outside an auction
It's an '03 Limited with 160000 miles on it. The rest of it looks like it's in good shape. The other bad news is the fluids looked good but they did not let us start it.

that rust doesnt seem to be that extreme compared to some i seen including mine mainly the rockers shows some rust but you still got rockers unlike mine where all i had was the top of the rocker and even the back of each rocker was gone an the frame seems good just need to take a scraper to get off some of the built up rust an put on some kind of sealer/rust stoping pain like some of these guys did, For that price id jump on it i got my 01 XLT excursion with the v10 x4x for 2700 an put an extra 600 into parts an its nearly done now just need weather to let me work since these things dont fit in my tiny garage
It will be easier to do the diesel conversion when starting with a diesel vehicle. The 03 6.0 is not as easy to work on as the 05-06 6.0. The body rust scares me. Most likely the rust is coming through from the inside so where else is it ready to eat through? The frame rust isn't that bad though.
