TPMS Auto Learn - How?

Well I swapped my 275/70-R18 wheels/rims for some 275/65-R20 brand new takes offs. The new takes offs came complete with the TPMS sensors. Took off the original wheels / rims and the TPMS readings disappeared as expected. Used Forscan to put the truck into TPMS learning mode, but could never get the truck to recognize the TPMS sensor, starting with the front left. After 4 or 5 attempts the driver front filly showed up, really strange since I never got the single honk signaling that the truck learned the new sensor (and yes I first took the trunk for 2+ min drive to wake up the sensors). Went to bed frustrated. Woke up this morning, started the truck and all the sensors appeared magically. Let a little air out of each tire, one at a time, and the sensors were even in the correct location.

So how does the truck know where the TPMS sensor is located. I thought this was by telling the truck during the TPMS learn process but this is clearly not the case.

Not a clue how the magic happened but fascinating nevertheless.

Every vehicle I've done the relearn on is based on position at the time of the relearn. The normal order is driver front, passenger front, passenger rear and driver rear. Even the relearn on the Ford TPMS in my RV trailer followed that order. If you change the location of the tires without doing the relearn then the truck doesn't know that they moved. I say this telling you want I know to be "normal". I don't know of any manufacturer that makes a vehicle that actually knows what tire position a sensor is in other than through a relearn done in a specific order.

Have had a similar experience with my 17.

Ordered new wheels/tires that came with TPMS installed. Jacked the truck up, pulled the stockers off, labeled what positions they came from, and installed the new setup.

My TPMS light NEVER came on. I checked today and all tire pressures are being displayed, in the correct location even. Odd, but I'm happy with it.

what tpms sensors are you guys getting? I want to get a set for my winter wheels. I cannot figure out which ones to get. My dealer parts wont give me the part number. My VIN pulls up both TPMS-42 and TPMS-43 on fordparts.com. Both sensors are labeled as 315 mhz. Which ones do I get? Thanks

Honestly man I would reach out to Extreme Customs and ask what sensors they are using, the ones I got just came as part of the wheel/tire package I purchased through them, I didn't ask for anything special.

I would check with Discount Tire and see if their sensors would work. I've used their sensors in to sets of wheels/tires and they worked fine with a Nissan. The bonus is that their sensors can be programmed to mimic the OEM sensors such that when you swap between summer and winter tires the truck doesn't know it and there is no need to do any relearn.
