Building a play toy.

I'm building a 1989 Ranger king cab. I have a 306 and installing a Crane 500 lift 284 duration cam. I'm also running straight timing gears. The heads are shaved 8 thousandth. I have a 600 cfm Motorcraft built by Holley 4 bbl sitting on a standard 4 bbl intake.
I'm planning a C-6 trans behind it. It took trans off a 300 6 popper that was in a full size van.
I have a few things I'm still trying to figure out.
1) What stall converter would be best? I'm thinking about a 3000 stall.
2) I have 2 different rears that I can use. One is a 345 out of a 1988 Ranger. That was a 2 wheel drive, standard cab long bed. The other is a 373 that came out of a 1984 Ranger, 4x4, standard cab, short bed.
I want the truck street able but still be able to play a little. I'm also planning to make it a flatbed so a little less weight on the rearend for traction.

You will need an 8.8" rear end for your motor. Older Rangers and newer Rangers with small motors used a 7.5" rear end. For the transmission, I would recommend using a C5 instead of a C6. The C6 is heavy and much larger then the C5.

What cylinder heads? None of the stock heads will make more than 275hp at 5000rpm so that is the max rpm you should target when selecting a cam.

+1 on the 8.8 rear axle, they were available in Rangers with the 3.0 and 4.0 motors.

I think 3000rpm stall is too high unless it's going to live at the drag strip. I prefer 2000-2500. And definitely lower gears, go with the 3.73.

The C-6 is practically bulletproof. A C-5 is a C-4 with a lockup converter.
I'm running a C-6 behind a 351W in my '64 pickup. It had been in the racecar, but I needed the truck more.
