Advice on camshaft

I'm building a 428 and need help with a cam. It's going in a 1974 F-250 4x4 (5,500 lbs) with C6AE-R heads (2.02/1.55). I have an Offy single plane Port-O-Sonic and I'm shooting for 9.5 compression. I talked to one shop and they recommended a Comp Cams .530 lift, 230 duration at .050 with ported heads. I am not going to port the heads but am going to port match the manifold to the heads. I already have a '69 Mach 1 and an '04 Z06 so I'm not looking for speed or big performance. I mainly want a real chunky idle with decent mid range. A friend recommended a Crower .538/.552 lift, .222/.228 duration cam which is rated at 1800-4500 RPM.

I'm only going to drive this about 4,000 miles a year and about half of that will be freeway. C-6 tranny with a shift kit and maybe a higher than stock stall. 35" tires with about a 4.56 rear gear. I want to use a 750 Holley and have dual 3" exhaust. I do not care about MPG. Little towing, no rock crawling or mud, just fun. What do you recommend?

I think, based on the parts listed, I think your situation is a little give and take. The camshaft that I would recommend would be a Comp XE274H, but it wouldn't compliment the heads that you currently have. If they havn't been already been rebuilt, I would go with the CJ valves (2.09/1.65) and port them anyway: again to compliment the cam. And depending on cost, a set of complete edelbrock heads might also be justifiable. Also, I might recomend a different intake manifold. A cast iron CJ will help your mid-range goals better than your offy single plane. Suitable and similar substitutes would be the old school edelbrock F427 or the factory police interceptor manifolds (especially if you plan of carbiding the intake). Personally, I've had a lot of luck with the tri-power setup as far as an excellent compromise between milage and all-out power! I think if you took these steps plus with the given displacement, you would be happier with the end product, as far as all the parts on the top end working together!

I agree that you have some wiggle room on the cam. That comp mangum, crane 343941, comp 274extreme alll all good choices. I also would look at the lunati voodoo, they have great acceleration.

magnum 230/230 at .050
343941 216/228
274 230/236

As for intakes the rpm, bluethunder, 428cj, and police interceptor are all good and so is a ported f427. In the unported form the f427, has small runner exits and suffers some power loss.

Lunati 62003

Hydraulic. High performance street/strip cam for 390 c.i. Excellent camshaft for 427 or 428 touring type vehicles with 9:1-9:5 compression ratio. Use 2200-2400 stall speed converter with 3.23-3.55 rear gears. Cam has a very noticeable idle quality!

Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 268/276
Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 227/233
Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .552/.564
LSA/ICL: 110/106
RPM Range: 1600-5800

Or if you really wanna go nuts, try Comp's 33-602-8 roller setup. That should get some attention!

The comp 280 pretty much fits the bill for the cam that you described in your post 1974f250. Good cam power range is 2000-6000 i belive and would have that nice "chunky" idle that you want. I wouldnt use a single plane intake for what your using, it will hurt your bottom end tq numbers. Just my .02
