1/4 mile drag time

Tell me what you think:

79 F150 longbox 2wd
351W 75 block, E7TE heads, Performer intake & carb, Crane PowerMax cam, stock duraspark ignition
HD C6 w/ stock 2100 stall convertor
Dana 44 rear 2.75 gears open diff

Best run was 16.200 @ 84.43 mph.

I was pretty happy myself, mostly because it's still the 2.75 rear. I still have to make final adjustments to the timing and the fuel mixture, I think that might be enough to get me in the 15's?? I was also happy because it beat my buddy's Delta 88 by 2 seconds.

Now if I can find a 9" posi with decent gears yet this summer/fall I think I can take those R/T Dakota's and Vortec Chev's

very good! 15's will be easy from where you are. the gears might do it alone if you don't run out of breath. here are some minor changes i would recomend if you are concerned with 1/4 mile times. the E7 heads are good but a set of C9OE or D0OE would be better, a C4 trans in place of the C6 (don't do this if you are a load hauler, if it is a cruiser/drag truck, occaisonal hauler it will be fine but a few overloaded hauls and it may not act so nice) and some headers will get you into the 14's low 15's without much effort. for gears i would start with 3.70's for a street truck 4.11's for a drag truck (higher if you run tall tires). hawkrod

I forgot to mention, MAC Mustang headers, full dual exhaust. I'm going to stick with the C6, mostly because it'll cost to change it out for a C4, and this is my farm truck, after all, might tow a trailer eventually. I'm trying to find 3.50 gears right now, mostly because it is my daily driver and I take the freeway every day, lower gears would necessitate an OD tranny (for me). I know the E7 heads are limiting me, engine doesn't want to breathe above 4500 rpm, but I'm spending $$ on paint before I change the heads.

If I remember rightly, the Dodge Lil Red Truck was in the 14's with about the same power (250-260?) and a 3.42/3.50 or so rear end. The Lil Red Truck I was following yesterday couldn't outrun me.

The only reason why you're not in the 14's is because of those gears. You need 3.90's, but at least a 3.55. Timing won't do any good, because the taller your gears are, the less of a difference horsepower will make. Even adding 100 HP will barely knock .2 sec off your time, but a gear swap alone will put you in the 14's. Then I'd go with some heads that can flow well, and you'll most likely lose another .2-.3 seconds. I have 2.75's too, and the only time I can live with them is on the highway at 85 MPH, because it is cool to go that fast and still be under 3000 RPM! They kill performance though. TK

The E7TE heads are the way to go. They are the best heads that Ford has made in years. The D0OE heads are good if you have alot of money to have them reworked beacause they don't have hardened valve seats and won't last very long on unleaded fuel, unless you want to add lead additive every time that you fill up. For the money, stick with the heads that you have and Go with a 3.50 or 3.70 gear. The 4X4's came with 3.50's alot, they will be easier to find.
