I experienced a 2-3 shift today that felt like my 5th wheel unhitched and landed on the truck.
The sensation and sound was sickening.
I just pulled out on the highway, 9500 lb 5th wheel in tow, tow haul on, moderate acceleration, when the 2-3 shift sounded and felt like a bomb went off. 2011 with 50k miles. Rather bizarre if you ask me.
I know the 2-3 shift is rather unique. Combines an upshift and down shift at the same time. I think at the moment it was shifting, I may have put my foot into it a bit more. Maybe the tranny got a little confused?
Not sure if I should head off to the dealer and have them check it out. Has been okay since.
It was quite frightening. Wife thought the trailer fell off.
I've had it happen 3 or 4 times in my 2011, each time when doing normal acceleration from a parking lot onto a road (not towing). Hangs in 1 and then revs and slams into 2. Last time it did it was maybe a year ago. Have about 94,000 miles on it. Doesn't seem to have any lasting effects. Researched it awhile back and evidently it's not out if the ordinary.
Have them scan for a wheel speed sensor code. My 2011 has done it twice. It hangs the RPM up high and then slams the next gear hard. I think the traction control may have sensed a wheel slip causing the traction control to activate and then releases and slams a gear. Now with that being said I know I didn't spin a tire so that's where the wheel speed sensor comes in, It may be dirty or just not functioning properly and I think can cause this proplem.
My Brother has a 2011 F-350 with the 6.7 Powerstroke and he had the same issue. Dealer replaced the pressure control solenoid and it took care of the problem.
