I like the idea of having it seriously cleaned in a vat and baked to get everything out of the water passages too. These engines were known to overheat new-I don't need to add a bunch rust and debris to the mix!
I have been applying light heat and penetrating oil to the last two stubborn pistons. Hoping to get those out to meet my rather arbitrary due date of this big weekend....
I had no idea how stinking heavy that crank was-good grief! No wonder the guys building the high horsepower engines use lightened cranks.
Letting her soak and a little heat and time.... Those last two had a bit of rust that finally let go! I feel so good about getting her apart.
Now I am going to take her in to the machine shop that did such a good job on my son's 261 Chevy 6 we put in his '50 Chevy pickup.
The pistons were 40 over, should I go with the smallest bore to clean things up or go out to 80 over? Now I will be able to justify getting some new 3-ring pistons. Do you think the three rings are the way to go?
If your machine shop can put the right finish on the cylinders, and hold tolerance, 3 ring free up some HP, not huge amounts. Never really documented. Just be sure you can get correct rings for them. Speedway sold a bunch of 3-ring pistons you couldn't get rings for. Egge is the best bet.
