Hello how would i get my pistons out of my 360 the heads oil pan and all other stuff is already off and Im to the point of taking out the pistons and my dad is always out of town. well thanks.
Invert the engine, so the crank is up. Then you just unbolt the rod bolts. Then you remove the caps, keeping them in order. Then you cut some short sections of fuel hose, and put it over the rod bolt threads so you dont score the crank. Then you carefully push the piston out the top, with one hand under the engine to catch the piston/rod combo and one hand above guiding the big end of the rod and pushing. Repeat 8x, and you're done!
The engine has been sitting for a few years and the piston will not just push out i tried, a friend sugested pushing them out with a small dowel and a hammer but i had a bad feeling about that.
What is the intended use for the parts coming out?
Turn the motor over so the deck is up, push the pistons down and spray a little wd-40 or oil on the walls. Flip the engine back over and have another go of it. You have a "ridge" built up at the top of the cylinder where the piston stops, which needs to be overcome. A hammer and dowel will not harm anything. The block will need to be honed or even bored and if you are upgrading to new pistons, you have that covered.
If you're going to have it bored and new pistons put in, and it sounds like you are, then the dowel and hammer idea is a very good one. Even if you wanted to save the pistons, for whatever reason, you're not going to be able to break them with the hammer, unless you used a sledge hammer.
Brake fluid is usually a good oil for freeing them up.
If the ridge at the top is pretty big, you may need to use a "ridge reamer" on there to knock it down enough. If so, go to your local parts house and do one of there tool rental/loaner deals.
