hard start cold?

1995 F350 psd 60,000 miles
I've put k&n and 4" exhaust and a Jasper trans in it since I bought it about a year ago also 2 new 850cca batteries, and starter
I can understand it being hard to start when its real cold
then i plug it in
but it gives me fits even at 50 degrees
first try it catches then shuts off
2nd try thru 6 or 7 tries cranks good, still wont start, but blows white smoke and stinks terrible
when it starts, it idles good but wont move for at least 5 minutes.
then it works fine all day until it sets for more than 5 hours
runs perfect otherwise
its embarassing when i take it to work because i work for a
GM (gag) dealer and i get razzed
can I fix or should I move to Florida where its warmer

help me please!

Sounds like the glow plug relay went out. Your cold start system isn't working. Go down to NAPA and buy a new GPR for $17 and put it on in place of the one you have now and it should start right up when cold.

It sounds like the problem and it's the cheapest thing to try. If you have a volt guage and know how to use it you can check it very easily. Even a test light should do. Just figure out which side is hot and put your test light on the other side and have someone turn the key on and see if it gets power to that side.

Mine is doing the EXACT same thing. Plugs, relay, & gaskets are on the way to my shack now. Hopefully I get them tomorrow. It should clear up my problem.

The glow plug relay can be a misfortune it seems on some of these trucks I have replaced mine twice on this truck. First time being that it shorted out causing the wiring harness to short out which in turn shorted out several of my glow plugs. What a little part to cause so much trouble and so much money. Good luck
