Driving from ID to OR today and watching instant mileage closely when I seen it dip from 19-19.5 mpg range to 11-12 mpg while maintaining a steady 67 mph on nice flat terrain. Watched the odometer and it lasted right close to 40 miles; is that similar to others experience? One other one I watched was closer to 30 miles to complete.

Running empty with minimal weight in truck.
Yup. That is consistent with what I am experiencing too.
My regens seem to be 15 to 20 minutes every 425 miles. I'm not certain, but I've been experimenting on driving styles to attempt to shorten them.
Normally, I drive gently, but I floor it for a few seconds once or twice about 5 minutes into the regen and it seems to make it complete much faster. Maybe it helps clear out the burning soot or spreads the burn out faster, not sure.
I have the DPF Status gauge on my dash now. I was able to "watch" my last regen go from 99% to 0% in about 20 minutes. I didn't do anything different, I just kept driving in mixed traffic.
I've found the regens can be shortened by more use of the throttle. More exhaust pressure produces more airflow through the filter element and shorter regen times.
I think this is what happened to me today on the way to work (30 min drive). I have about 630 miles (about 150 of them towing 10k or so) on the truck as of now. driving home yesterday was fine sitting around 17 mpg and climbing. drive to work this morning and notice it sounds like its using the engine brake or something when I let up on the throttle. literally watched the mpg cal. roll backwards to about 14.7 or so. Prolly would have gone a bit further but I made it to my destination. I did not really sense a change in rpm's during this time like I read on some other post's. guessing this is the regen?
Duration is about 40 miles for me as well......I'm glad my commute is 46 miles! (Couple days a week I drive the SD and the other days I drive my 400,000 mile VW TDI @ 50 MPG)
Watched my driving and mpg closely during my recent 1400 mile trip. 6.7 3.55 s with 20 s
when on back roads doing between 50-55 getting 21-22 mpg. Driving 68-69 on freeway getting 20-20.5 ish. All on lie o meter... when I actually calculated the mileage it was closer to 19.5-19.75 on the slow speed and around 18.75-19.0 for freeway. Are others finding similar differences on mpgs per truck vs hand calculated???
