How are you getting so many MPG.....
I have a bone stock 16' F250 SD XLT CC 4x4 wit 10k miles. Based off my odometer I am only getting roughly 12 to 13 mpg. To and from work is 60 miles daily highway miles. Another 20 miles or so nightly taking kids to and from practice thats city miles.
How the hell you guys getting 15+ mpg?

Your computer averages the miles. On the highway alone I can keep 17 or 18MPG pretty easily. The second you start sitting in traffic or end up on side streets or back roads that mileage average drops like a rock. Hand calculate the numbers if you are concerned about it.

That's a fact. I am in the Denver area, so the altitude doesn't help me out and neither does the 10% ethanol fuel that is the norm here. I also tend to have a lead foot, and unfortunately sometimes the highway driving behaves more like city driving.

Those I've seen who report 15+ MPGs have 3.73 gears. Lots of folks insist that gearing doesn't have much to do with fuel economy, but that's never made any sense to me. Lower engine speed at higher manifold pressure means less pumping and frictional losses.

that is why we have a 6 speed automatic.. 5 and 6th are overdrive.
Yes empty 4:30 will get a little less MPG.
keep the truck under 60 for best MPG. its not easy.
MY best is 21.. doing 50 in North Carolina back roads.. that is over 300 miles. Hand calculation. but than, My 2012 is broken in. 145,000 miles.

Get you truck's VIN and enter it. It will list your rear axel ratio on the 3rd tab- "Equipment".

For the truck in my signature, I get 11-12 around town. Normal (Urban) Highway 13.5 - 15. If I drive it like my Grandma, and keep it ~62, with the cruise control, I've seen (country) highway mileage as high as 16.5, but that's kind of rare.

NO. No, no, no. Octane is a measure of resistance to ignition, useful for high compression engines so as to avoid knocking (premature ignition due to compression).
Use whatever fuel is recommended in your owner's manual. "Upgrading" to anything else is a waste of time, the impulse the result of fuel retailers' long-term marketing efforts perpetrating a lie.

I just completed a 3K mile round trip unloaded to Phoenix, AZ and back. All highway (obviously), mix of flat land, rolling hills and mountain grades. I averaged between 70 and 80 mph, the only time I was under 70 was in towns or if I hit construction zones, and my mpg for the entire trip was 14.9. I was fortunate to not get into any serious head winds which helped. I bought only standard grade gas (85 or 87 whichever was avail at the pump).
Going slower definitely helps, as I have made better mpg averages when driving 60-65.
OP, your mileage may improve with more miles on the truck. And the fastest way to kill the mpg is to go WOT (wide open throttle). Try to avoid that when you can.
