I've had my 2012 F250 ExCab 6.2L for about a year-I bought it with 75K and have just shy of 80K on it now. We have a small farm property and I only really use it on weekends-I'm assigned a vehicle for work so I don't use the truck for commuting, etc... I don't really do any towing, just hauling loads of hay in the bed, running around town, not much highway driving. The most highway driving I've done with it was when I drove it home from the dealer-about 35 miles. That said, the computer has my average pegged at 7.7 MPG and it doesn't seem to ever change. I don't really get my foot into it that much, try to take it easy off of lights, etc... I stick to regular oil and filter/air filter change intervals. Is this really as good as it gets with the type of driving I do or is something wrong?
my 2014 averages 8.6 in town driving, which is 99% of my driving.
if i get out on the highway it will get up to 12 or so, but that is only 20 mile runs once every 6-7 months.

Thanks-I kind of figured as much but thought I'd check. Not a huge deal since my weekday commuting gas and vehicle maintenance are thankfully paid by my employer.

Your usage indicates that it would obtain a low MPG. Short trips, some hauling, probably some idling, and stop-and-go will eat up a lot of fuel.
To put it in perspective, I've put about 1800 miles on my '16 and experienced anywhere from 9 to 13 mpg. 9 towing a trailer 7500 lbs at highway speeds and 13 running empty at 65 mph. The current tank I am on (220 miles so far) is showing 15.1 mpg but that has been 2 lane, level highways where the average speed was 55 - 60 mph and the truck was totally empty.
Also, if you haven't reset the fuel average since you bought it (or if you ever have?), reset it and see what it does. I keep a log of my averages per tank but reset the instant MPG gauge at every fill up. The trip A and trip B meter can also keep track of short or long term MPG.
it is funny how in the early 60's a falcon was capable of over 30 mpg.
then along comes the EPA and we are hard pressed to see 20 mpg on mid sized car.
now 50 years later, it is still hard pressed to see 30 mpg on anything except a hybrid car.
and with pickups, my 2014 with double overdrive trans gets worse mileage than any of my 3 1979 F350 4X4's without overdrive transmissions.
but the heated debate of the 100 mpg carburetor is gone
but the 3,000 mile oil change continues....
when the oil embargo hit.. I purchased a New 1974 Honda Civic 5 speed.. 36 mpg on the highway..
that was almost as good as my motorcycle...
<< History >> the 3,000 mile oil change was Set.... before car engines had oil filters... fyi....
the earliest engine I have rebuilt for a customer was a 1911 Maxwell automobile.
I get 12-13 around town and 13-14 on the highway. I have 4.30 gears. Are you running the original spark plugs? May be time to change them out.....
Good point-owning a diesel truck for so many years I kind of forget that I have spark plugs sometimes Whatever is in there now at 80K was in it when I bought it at 75K. Will definitely do that-wires too? One interesting note-I have 3.73s so I wonder if your 4.30s are giving you a little better around town mileage because of the greater mechanical advantage off of every stop?

With your truck’s combination of age, mileage, and operating conditions, it may be time to think about inspecting the spark plugs, and maybe even changing them — all 16 of ‘em.

Wow-I'm really behind the times as far as gassers go. The last time I changed spark plugs on a truck with a V8 it only had 8 plugs-of course it had an actual distributor too

Not sure on the wires however, manual calls for spark plug changes at 100k for normal use and 50k for severe use. I plan to split it down the middle and do it at 75k. My truck only has 1250 miles on it through the first 4 months so my mileage results are based on mainly short trips around town. Will be getting the RV out of storage in a few months and plan to do quite a bit of towing this summer so, i suspect my results will change some. I think the 4.30 gears help for how I use it....short trips and towing. On my one 200 mile freeway run, i got 14.3 MPG but that was on rather flat ground doing right at 70mph. If you drive with a light foot....it's not to bad. If you get into it, you can almost see the gas gauge moving....LOL.
