correct door handle angle?

Were the door handles originally perpendicular to the ground or parallel to the ground? I've seen them both ways in restoration pics. Perpendicular seems easier to open/lock, but what was the factory orientation?

Reviewing 65-66 'illustrated facts and features manual' pictures the door handle is pointed down in what appears to be the 6 o'clock position. Interested in other member response?

I set the handles in a position that does not interfere with my leg or knee.

Interesting. I think sideways looks better but vertical is more functional for the driver side. Sideways seems more functional for reaching over from driver side to unlock the passenger door.

I keep mine in the 10-11 O'clock position as it looks nicer and is easier to use.
