1997 351w swap?
1997 351w swap?
Alright, got a 72 F250 but that is not what this question is about.
Looking to do an engine swap with the donner truck being a 97 F250 4x4 automatic. If I just want to take the engine with its FI, besides the engine harness and ECM, anything else out of the engine compartment I would need. Would there be anything in the cab that I need? don't know if the ECM is in the engine compartment or in the cab. Plan on maybe mating this engine to a Jeep NV3550 5 speed, I know I might need to modify the automatic wiring, anything major?
If you need to know, I am thinking of putting this 351W in a 83 Jeep Cherokee, last year of the big ones, Grand Wagoner size.
Looking to see if anyone has taken a fuel injected 351w out of a ford truck and put in anything else. I have asked this question on the full size jeep fourms also, just looking to get all info I can.
Thanks

Wrong Forum. This forum is for the new F-150 body style starting with the 1997 model year.
You need the previous-generation body style Forum. Go to the Forum Index page here:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/index.php
Then scroll down to the "Older Classic & Antique Trucks", to the 1987 - 1996 trucks, it includes the HD 1997 F-250 & 350 in the description.

How are you going to mate the Ford to the Jeep?
The Ford PCM is equipped to control an automatic transmission.
Even if you were to mate the motor to the Jeep, the trans control would be a night mare.
Then there is the high pressure fuel system and all the other hassles to deal with.
Not worth the end result.
Good luck.

For the 1997 model year, the F-150 was a totally different truck than 1996 and earlier. Later in 1997, there was a 1997 F-250 LD, which was a 1997 F-150 with heavier suspension, axle, has 7-lug wheels. It has a higher payload than the regular 1997 F-150. It used modular engines, like the new F-150, NOT the Ford small blocks or big block of the previous generation.
The 1997 F-250 HD and F-350 were carryovers of the 1996 style pickups, then the next-gen F-250 HD and F-350 came out.
Thanks for that input I'm not dead set on the 351 it's just always been a thought right now I built a 4.7 stroker straight six out of the Jeep 4.0 engine and I've got a Mercedes supercharger that I'm putting on it
Update:
Picked up a 96 F150 with the 351W and E4OD. Jeep is keeping the 351W with a 4 bbl carb that I built for it, so 351W, mated to a NV3553 5 speed mated to the NP 208 xfrcase from the old set up. Yes, with an adapter between the ford bell housing and the Jeep tranny, everything bolts up ( xfr case is clocked a little but should work, just need to figure out engine mounts. The engine/tranny/driveshaft combo from the 96 is going in my 71 F250, replacing the 360 and C6. I picked up rear end out of a 93 F250 for the speed sensor, I of course, will need to move the spring perches in about 2" and move the shock mounts.
So I will just need to figure out the engine wiring. I am guessing I will also need to somehow incorporate the 96 gauge cluster in the 71 dash because of a speed sensor stuff? Should I also take the ignition from the donor truck? need to weed out any non engine/tranny/ECU wires I don't need. I am going to try and see if I can use the front tank from the 96 and put in where my extra tank is on the 71, don't have the in cab tank anymore. The rear tank from the 96 will go into the Jeep Wagoneer.
can you folks figure out if I need anything else from the donor 96? I do plan on putting a new timing chain on, maybe new freeze plugs and new gaskets.
thanks
