351W engine swap

Alright, got a 72 F250 but that is not what this question is about.

Looking to do an engine swap with the donner truck being a 97 F250 4x4 automatic. If I just want to take the engine with its FI, besides the engine harness and ECM, anything else out of the engine compartment I would need. Would there be anything in the cab that I need? don't know if the ECM is in the engine compartment or in the cab. Plan on maybe mating this engine to a Jeep NV3550 5 speed, I know I might need to modify the automatic wiring, anything major?

If you need to know, I am thinking of putting this 351W in a 83 Jeep Cherokee, last year of the big ones, Grand Wagoner size.

Looking to see if anyone has taken a fuel injected 351w out of a ford truck and put in anything else. I have asked this question on the full size jeep fourms also, just looking to get all info I can.

Thanks

With this vintage truck the PCM gets speed input from the PSOM in the dash cluster which gets a data stream from the VSS/RABS sensor in the rear axle, so you need all of that as well or you have to create the signal some other way. Speed input is a critical input for the PCM too so the system will never work correctly without it.
That IMO makes this truck a poor wiring donor for this project, I would take the engine though as it is roller cam equipped.
So what to do about wiring. An 89-91 truck with a 5.8 and C6 or manual trans would be a good source as the engine harness is almost totally self contained and the dash cluster and rear axle are not involved.. the computer gets speed input from a sensor in the trans or t-case. Another option would be to use an aftermarket conversion harness with a Mustang computer, this may actually be better in the long run as this computer will run a stock 5.8 as it is and can also be tuned so the motor can be built up at a later date and you just have to plug in the data for larger injectors and MAF meter.

Get the whole donor truck and park them next to each other then you have everything you need. If you piecemeal it together it will eat you alive.

351 wouldn't be my first choice. See if you can come up with a 6.2 GM diesel truck for the swap, it's all mechanical, no electronics. Good mileage, economical, usable power but not a hot rod. Add propane.

There is a guy who goes by Goldco doing this in a 50s truck with E4 & having a time of it.

He'd probably say don't, but he started with mostly engine/trans & not much else.

What Con says above is very true.

If you've got the whole truck to pull from & it was functional to begin with (and some skills) , go for it.

Most everybody here will assist.
