Hello everyone! Been a while since on here. Me, Fam and the F-100 Lone Ranger have made the trip from OKC to FL! Now, he is not happy. It ran to get off the trailer and into the garage than sat for a month. Went to drive it to the car wash and had to turn around 1/2 way and limp back home the whole 1/4 mile. Replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, cap, rotor, plugs, oil change and all I get is spitting and sputtering. It is a 360 with an Edelbrock Performer 390 intake and 1406 600 CFM carb that was rebuilt professionally last year by the Carburetor Shop in Midwest City, OK. HELP! I am out of options but to throw a new $350 carb at it!
Check the wires between your distributor and ignition control box on the left inner fender near the hinge. These wires tend to dry out their insulation, which then flakes off of the copper, leading to shorts. I thought this was just a Fox Mustang phenomenon, but have seen it mentioned here too. Also, the insulation can shrink back from the connector terminals, leaving bare uncovered copper wire coming out of the plastic connectors.
Dunno if this is your problem or not, but I chased this problem for several months on an '84 Capri RS 5.0, finally finding it after an oil change, as the filter was kind of in those wires, and I was somehow astute enough to considered that I had just jostled those wires, when the problem reoccurred soon after.
You should also check for spark and make sure that it's not weak, as it could be a coil getting weak, or the pick-up module going bad.
And for the heck of it, go ahead and check your vacuum lines and make sure none have developed a leak.
What does the exhaust smell like when the problem occurs?
