Both times this exact same thing has happened to me on two different Ford vehicles I completely lost the AC cooling ability not too long after, and had to have the system vacuumed and recharged.

I had a similar issue on the V10; the cooling fan is operated by a thermostat. It should roar audibly when fully engaged (idling in the heat with A/C on).

A few things...assuming your system is fully charged, you may have a fan clutch that is starting to fail. However, even with a new clutch, these mechanical fan cooling systems don't cool very well at idle. You could add an electric fan to run at low speeds to help air flow through the condenser. There is another thread here where I listed a Ford part number for a switch. Bascially the switch screws into the high side and at certain pressure it closes and would turn the electric fan on.

Let your truck sit over night, open the hood and spin the fan. Be careful, the plastic blades can be sharp! The fan should barely spin as the fluid should be cold. If it spins more than 1/2 a revolution, I would change the clutch.

To some extent that's normal. There are things that can exacerbate the issue like others have mentioned but the ultimate cause is a combination of 1. less airflow through the condenser and 2. less compressor RPM/less refrigerant flow through the system.

#1 does have an effect, but #2 is the biggest cause. The more rapidly you can move a refrigerant/coolant through a system the more effective it is at exchanging heat.

So yes, definitely make sure all of your stuff is in working order. After that if it still isn't good enough for you, pedal the engine up to 1,000 RPM and that will make a world of difference. You may want to consider the "high-idle mod" if you find you need to do this often.
