94-98 Upgrade plan

I have owned multiple diesel trucks, but know relatively little about performance parts so I was hoping to get some guidance. I plan on buying a 94-98 powerstroke and will initially have a performance part budget of $10k - $30k. After the initial budget I plan to continue purchasing more parts as needed. I am trying to determine what needs to be purchased and in what order. My primary goal is speed/acceleration. Very irregularly will I need to tow or haul anything relatively heavy. The truck would be 4wd and auto trans. The one thought I had was to purchase the transmission first since I will need it eventually and it is likely to be the most expensive purchase. Thoughts?

All of that depends on your power goals.

There are a million different directions to go depending on what you want to do. Without a specific target goal, we cannot help you. It's that simple.

You need to do more research and set some goals/targets you want to achieve.

Diesel power products gas a "recipe" for 600+ HP on these models. I guess I'm trying to determine is thats generally considered to be the max limit while being daily drivable/street legal.

+1. Too little information to go on. It's good that you have a budget, but you have to have some idea of what you are trying to accomplish.

If you just want to go fast, can I ask why you want to do so in a diesel-powered, 8000 pound brick? My Mini Cooper S is way faster than my X will ever be and I have a lot of upgrades in the truck.

I grew up on a farm and have always enjoyed trucks more than cars. Since I don't foresee the need to tow or haul heavy loads, it seems like speed would be the logical performance route.

You're going to have to do everything. Built transmission, modified IDM, intercooler, huge injectors, aftermarket HPOP, studs, valve springs, push rods, big turbo, custom tuning, fuel system and possibly even connecting rods.

i suppose the tranny is what you'd start with. From there I would choose someone to do your tunes, and talk with them about what you need to do.

All that said, chasing 600 hp in a 7.3 is very expensive and pushing the limit of the stock block

You'd be wise to do homework on other engines before pulling the trigger on a 7.3.
