Need starter advice.

I replaced my starter a couple of years ago with a lifetime O'Reilly unit. Of course it's dying on me but since it's a lifetime warranty I'm going to get it replaced. But I'm wanting a high Torque type this time. I'm friends with most of the O'Reilly guys here and I can change it out with a different style under warranty. I've read of some using a two bolt starter for a 6.0. Can anyone elaborate a little on this? Anybody have a part number cross to start with? Thanks
OH sorry.. It's a late 99.

So I'm doing some reading. I've read where the stock 03 starter is a gear reduction design. Is the 03 different than the 99.5?

Get a real Denso starter and never look back. These spin the engine waaaay faster and are user-rebuildable forever.

I've been buying them from CNC Fab.

Thanks Jason. Any advice on a starter from O'Reillys? We're coming off a week vacation and bought a golf cart so money is a bit tight right now? The pos on there now is a lifetime deal but if there's a better maybe gear reduction option from O'Reillys they will let me change.

Sell the replacement starter from oriellys to help pay for the Denso.

On edit: get oriellys to give your $$$ back!!!

I got SICK of swapping the POS starters from autoparts. 'Free' replacement is a relative term. When my last one failed, I was working out of town and was VERY lucky to have a coworker nearby my campsite come give me a tow/push start - or missing a day of work would have cost more than the Denso...

I put the Denso starter on 75% of the trucks I work on.

To me, it's well worth paying 2x as much for a starter that doesn't leave me hanging. After 180k miles, I had to replace the contacts ($34 and 10 mins) in my first Denso - but it didn't leave me stranded.

Looking for an education here. What is so much better about the denso? I put a starter in about a year ago and it looks like the design of the one on the right but is a cheap reman.

Jason, I was not able to take you up on the starter swap out when you had my truck under the knife, but think I will swap it out when the truck goes into my garage for post-summer maintenance tasks.

I thought I had read somewhere that the CNC Fab Denso requires a bit of grinding in order to fit, is this right or am I thinking of something else?

Corey is a great guy to deal with in my experience, even when I had a part fail from him, he was spot on and seemed genuinely concerned about what was going on.

My other option is to remove the OEM and have it rebuilt to a higher standard locally.

The DB electric and other cheap knock-off 'Denso-type' starters are JUNK. I tried that and after 3rd one only worked 12 times before crapping the bed - I gave up.

The Denso is a 5.4hp gear reduction starter. It requires less amps and therefore does not heat up as much. It also has superior bushings/bearings and HUGE contacts.

The contacts last 150-200k miles. The bushings will go 250-300k and motor should last 350k +.

You cannot get a 'rebuild' that will do this. This starter is by far the best bang for your buck IMHO.

Yes, clearancing is required on the X-member for some trucks. Not a big deal at all. 3 minutes with 4" grinder...

Who is your source? Does it look like the OEM?
(I have a spare starter, but I no longer like it and do not want to have to reinstall it.)

I went back with the same warranted starter from O'Reillys this time due to it being a quick fix. But I'm going to be planning for when it goes out again. Not sure what I'll go with but it won't be the same one.

Ive bought several from CNC Fabrication. Most come in 2-3 days after ordering.

This pic doesn't do it justice. The Denso motor is 2-3x bigger than most of the OEM options. It's a beast.

You know how 6.0's seem to spin really fast when starting? This starter spins 7.3's that fast.

I've been following your thread. Unfortunately I don't have anything to add except that I've had my NAPA starter for...about 2 yrs I think.

When starting this injector work I noticed the TWO bolts are VERY loose

I'm good about tightening bolts. I'll redo them with loctite.

I believe the OEM was on it before. When I did the coolant flush there wasn't any way I could keep the starter from getting drenched. It was...maybe 6 months after that for it to quit.

But I also had battery and alternator issues, so it's hard to say why it died.

This NAPA starter turns the truck over quite well normally. I just replaced the alternator again and it's time for batteries.

That's what I have to offer

Thanks, What was this starter for originally? I am guessing IH trucks? I may have to add one to the wish list to keep on hand for when mine goes out.

My 3rd Napa starter failed to start the truck before work one morning (1000 miles from home) and I had a meltdown. I DGAF about 'free' replacement. I want a starter that doesn't leave me stranded.

I always clean the bolts and holes with brake cleaner and never have issues with bolts getting loose. But, you can always do that and add some blue loctite if you're worried about bolts loosening up.
