302 or 352?

I seem to have a choice. I can either purchase a 302 or a 352 to rebuild for my '73 Custom. With the 302, all my accessories work and I have all the brackets. With the 352 I will need 'new' brackets and a new bell housing for the FE motor. Either way, I will be rebuilding the new motor while still driving the old smoker.

Thoughts?

Long bed or short bed?
Planned use?
2WD or 4WD?

Cruiser, lite hauler, shortbed 2WD... go with a 302.

Work truck, either long bed or short bed, either 2WD or 4WD go with the 352. But I'd build it up to a 390 for cheap.

Depends....

I'd go with whatever came in it if you still have the parts that came with it.

Blank slate? I'd probably go SBF over FE just for the ease of parts and upgradea.

I understand you have 302 now... so 302 replacement is a lot simpler & lower cost considering accessories, mounts and transmission.

Also you said "rebuild" not stroke or significantly modify. I think the 302 is a better candidate with that goal based on parts availability and performance potential with stock type parts.

I agree the answer depends on lots of things... just going on the (limited) information in the post.

Neither Find a 351W gives the displacement of the 352 and will drop right in place of the 302.

Assuming those are the only two choices you have, for whatever reason, and you plan to rebuild to a factory spec, I would go with the 302 simply because the windsor platform is like Chevy's 350, there's a lot of inexpensive parts for them which makes them cheaper to build/maintain. I have the 302/C4 in my 77 F100 and I like it, granted, I don't do anything with it that requires a lot of power and I don't plan to build the 302 in the future. The current use and platform of my truck is what HIO outlined for his 302 recommendation.

I'd stick with the 302 for weight savings and more room under the hood, and cost and wide selection of parts including multi-port EFI.
Although the 351W is a darn good idea too, if you can find a decent one in the price range.

352 is not a good choice, plus...what year Galaxie did it come from?

352 (B&S: 4.00" x 3.50"): 1958/67 full sized Ford Passenger Cars; 1965/67 F100/350.

1958/64 FE engines have rounded valve covers without holes for smog valve/oil caps; have an engine oil fill tube at the right front.

Since these engines were only installed in cars, have a different bolt pattern on the block for the motor mounts than 1965/76 FE engines.

1973 F100 could have a 240 or 300 I-6; 302; 360; 390; 460.

351W: 1969/89 misc. FoMoCo Passenger Cars; 1975/97 Econoline; 1981/96 F150/350 & Bronco; 1997 F250 H/D & F350.

Wow...overwhelmingly the 302, and you all make very good arguments. The engine I am looking at is from a '69 Torino, it should well be a good candidate for my tuck without a lot of additional expense and work (hand't thought about the motor mounts) and I get to use all the accessories I already have.

Thanks for the insight!

From a 69 that is a good score if the engine has all the original bits on it. As it was one of 2 years (69-70) with the highest base 2 BBL HP rating for the 302, 220HP Gross.

That's when the compression ratios were highest. Still probably better off with some E7TE or Explorer heads though, as the Torino heads would need to be very skillfully ported to begin to compete with the most recent casting revisions.

The difference is not as great as one would think about 20 CFM at 20" HG and that is with the GT40P heads

When compared to the E7TE the GT40's are a huge improvement
about 50 CFM at 20" HG the E7's were just about the worst flowing head ever put on the small blocks, the GT40's compared to earlier heads the difference is not that great.

I'd always thought that E7s were pretty much the same as nearly all SBF heads which came before them - save for the early 351Ws with the larger intake valve.
Recently though, I've been reading in some forums that people think that E7s really are an improvement over a typical '85-or-earlier head.
