I just noticed this also that the shifter top plate has a shifter located farther back. Someone else on one of the ranger forums seemed to ask the same question whether or not top plates could be interchanged as I could easily do that but not sure if it would work but there was no answer provided for them either.

From what I could find, the 97 and up covers do not interchange with the pre97 trans and the m5od-r1 cover does not interchange with the r2
But again that's what I could FIND not 100 percent positive

That's what I thought also about when it changed, but wasn't sure so I just started with 99 since I was sure at least then.
