About to change my transmission fluid and filter, and gotchas I need to be aware of ? This is my first change on an Excursion

I'd be willing to bet there's a tech folder on this, thought I haven't looked. What trans do you have?

I have a 5R and I always use Motorcraft fluid and filters. The remote filter is expensive, but required OEM in my view.

 

That depends on which transmission you have. And the transmission depends on which engine you have.

 

Im not sure what Tranny it is...I have a 6.0 L Power Stroke. Is it the 4 speed ?

 

ALL 6L PSD have the 5R110 transmission.

Mercon SP was the originally spec'd fluid (which is still available in some places)
Mercon LV is now an approved fluid as well (Ford added this in 2010 when they discussed discontinuing SP)

You'll want to use an impact wrench to replace the "toilet paper - like" filter behind underneath the front bumper - area, since it's easy to break the lines using a wrench, the "quick" torque of the impact negate the breaking concern.

Depending on the year, you may have an internal filter, or just a rock screen.
So, most just drain using the trans-pan drain, but since it's your new-to-you Ex, it would be worth dropping the pan to investigate.

 

You have the 5R110W TorqShift transmission. All you can do is drain the pan and replace that fluid. As Misky6.0 said, replace the external filter. The internal filter isn't fine enough that it will ever need replacing, though a lot of people do replace it.

Hello guys. I'm a new Ex owner. I purchased my Ex earlier this spring. It's great for the big family and towing our big camper. Here are some details; Camper weighs about 9k lbs when loaded. I have a 01 Limited Ex, 2wd, v-10, 4r100 tranny, temp gauge installed in factory test port. I have a good Hensley Hitch and bags to level my ride.

Here's the issue. I've been towing around flat areas and see about average 178 degrees. I went through the PA mountains from Ohio over to Gettysburg. On the way there it was literally through tunnels on the turnpike. Sometimes bigger hills slowing me way down. Temps no higher than 198. On the way back google had me going up and over a couple of big ones. Temps were up to 215 and just at the peak I had to pull off because of smoke and flames. I'm thinking too much fluid was in the tranny from the last owner. Fluid spewing out of the top of the vent and down on top of the hot exhaust and ignited. Sure brought new meaning of Chinese fire drill to evacuate wife and kids.

So after much fluid loss, I thought I busted a seal. But here 1 month later, a couple more camping trips around home and no more fluid loss. After checking fluid level the right way (tranny warmed up, on level ground, in neutral with e-brake), It's still reading above the hash marks.

Do I need to just drain some excess off and problem solved? Will that start to raise Tranny temps? I heard these factory coolers aren't the best.

Any input would help. Thank you!

Here is some information related to this from my notes when I changed mine in 2012:
Motorcraft Mercon LV or AMSOil ATLQT
Internal Filter Motorcraft FT-144
External Filter Motorcraft FT-145
Tools/Equipment Needed- 22mm front filter, (if replacing both filters, buy 17 quarts of Mercon LV, full flush 24 qts, change all every 40,000), Pour in 15qts then Start engine, shift to Drive then to Park and immediately check level. Fill to top of “C” area. Should be about 16 quarts.
The amounts listed above are for my Mag-Hytec trans pan (which hold more than a stock pan) so your amounts will be less.

Yes, just drain some fluid until it is inside the hash marks. That will fix your problem. It should slightly lower your temperatures. When the fluid is too high the rotating parts inside the trans whip the fluid, which greatly expands it, plus the whipping raises the fluid temperature.

The factory coolers are not the best, but your temperatures are right where they should be.

No, according to the AMSOil website it is two different products. I don't know the difference but just go to their site and search those two abbreviations and it will tell you about them.
