First filter change on this truck. Purged the truck six times. No start. Purged it six more times. The truck started momentary. I've been purging for the last two hours. Now I have the code.
What next?
I am happy to report. She's running again.
After taking everything apart and reinstalling she cranked right up. It really blows when a thirty minute project takes all day. :0
For me it was the top filter pressurized with air...once I re-seated the connections on the top filter she passed fuel and started right up.. I found it was easier to get the wife to cycle the key while leaving my hand on the filter...I could feel if it was passing fuel or not..
I believe I didn't tighten the canister tight enough. I didn't want to put to much force on it, for fear of it breaking. Although I have a new one in the tool box, When I was tightening it up, the canister creaked and made some noises. I thought I may have broke it. But all is well.
Thanks for asking. Maybe others can learn from my mistake. I've changed filters on all the other diesels without any issues. I was in a hurry and had other things to do. Needless to say the other things didn't happen.
With out lube on the threads the canister goes on hard so it makes you want to call it at some point. So I found by lubeing the threads with motor oil it goes right up to the stop. I also made a strap wrench out of a piece of nylon webbing and wood. I bought a strap wrench and it was useless. I broke the first filter housing (frame one) at the nut like so many here. Using the strap wrench is the best thing I've done now for many times. No worries.

My father used to give me hell "why do you always have to make stuff so tight". So now at 62 I am learning to heed his advice - same thing happened to me - I didn't tighten the canister until it stopped.

Yes and with Oil on the threads it will go on easy until the stop. Very obvious when you hit the stop doing it this way.
I will remember to put some oil on the threads next time. The way it popped and creaked, I thought for sure I broke it while reinstalling it. I cycled it six times and she started right up. I was planning on riding to work the next day. I don't do a lot of riding in August in Texas. It's just to frigging Hot.
