Does anybody know how to tell what amp alternator I have in my 2004 F150 Lariat 4x4 with 5.4L? I got a P0622 Generator Field "F" Control Circuit Malfunction while driving home. My reading from my Torque Pro app showed voltage only at 11.4 volts. When I got home and checked the battery voltage with the truck off, it was 12.16 volts. I put a new battery in last year so it should be good. As soon as I start it, the voltage drops back down into the 11's. I'm assuming my alternator is bad and need to know what amp alternator to replace it with. Any ideas? Thanks.
I would put the 130 amp alternator in it......... The smaller 95 amp should not have come in that truck. .............. count the number of grooves on the pulley.
Thanks for the response. I wouldn't even think about putting the 95 amp in it and I want to stick with Motorcraft. My choices from Rock Auto are two different 110 amp ones and 2 different 115 amp ones. They don't list a 130 amp alternator in any brand for my truck. O'reilly Auto Parts lists Motorcraft alternators in 110 amp and 130 amp but they're way expensive. I've also heard people on the boards say that they put in the 130 amp cause, like mine, their window sticker says 130 amp but their battery light stayed on. They even returned it and tried another but it was still on. It didn't go off until they put on the 110 amp alternator. So, I'm confused as to what to go with. The fordparts.com website only lists the 110 amp for my truck. Really confused.
Your going to find a lot of the "NEW" alternators are made in China.. The quality has been drastically increased in the past 2 years. I would not buy a "rebuild".... There are going to be 20 places all selling the same alternator under a different "distributor name"........ look for one that has a year guarantee, and has sold a BUNCH of them.. I bought one similar to this below..... I guess the 2004 UP are 110 amp.. the same basic alternator for 2000- 2003 is a 130 amp unit... not a lot of difference in visual.
Be sure to clean up the battery cable ground points, connections and terminals etc. Check cables for corrosion and replace if necessary. It won't matter what size alternator is installed if there is any corrosion or resistance built up it will be crippled.
