Time to change the serpentine belt on my dads truck. How in the hell do I get to it with the fan shroud and fan clutch in the way. I've got the fan clutch removal tool part number but I'm still puzzled as to how you even get to it without taking some stuff off. Any tips to prep for this project is much appreciated.
So pretty much Ford just expects everybody to have elastic arms and hands? Damn. I see what it's saying but it's not an easy reach by any means. I'll give it a go though.
While it isn't the easiest job, it can be done without removing anything other than the aforementioned sensor. You have very little room, and it's hard to see the the 1/2" tensioner recess. I used a 1/2" breaker bar to relieve the belt tension and slid it off. Putting the belt back on involved getting under the truck to make sure everything was lined up prior to crawling up top to use the breaker bar again. Make sure you check over the belt routing on the driver's side, as it winds around quite a few pullies. And an extra set of hands would have certainly helped and sped up the job. I replaced a few pulley bearings while I was at it for preventative maintenance.
On my 2011 truck I had the dealer replace the belt while doing the tranny and coolant flush. I called to check on it and they said, We are almost come and pick it up. I got there and had to wait two hours while the tech fought with the belt trying to get it on. He finally went and got a more Experienced tech who got it on in minutes. I guess it's all about having done it a time or two.
There is nothing in the Ford Workshop Manual about removal of the shroud or fan clutch...

Well all done. Wasn't too bad. Could do it again pretty damn fast now. Check engine light came on, but from filter minder. Besides that, glad my dad wont have to worry about the belt again. Put one of the Gates green fleetline belts on so should be good for rest of trucks life.
