Right's and wrong's on the 6.7
After 14 years of being 6.0 owner,I upgraded to 2017 F350 Lariat crew. What I like to here about is the right and wrong things on keeping up on my truck.I was a successful and happy 6.0 owner due to staying on top of things. Hope to be a happy 6.7 owner. Been following the 6.7 forum for a while, kind of fast reading compared to the 6.0 forum.
Thanks Mike

Wrongs - the cold side intercooler pipe - you're going to need to replace that
Wrong - DEF - sorry - had to list it - but it's wrong on all diesel engines - not unique to the 6.7 - may have gotten better in the 2017 - in the '13 it's awful - no gauge, need a special "filler tube" to add it, can't use the truck stop

Don't use any alcohol based fuel additives, or any additives that are "emulsifiers" to keep water in suspension. If you use any thing like that, make sure it is a demulsifier that will remove the water so you can drain it at the frame mounted filter. Other that that, read the diesel supplement book for the 6.7; and read through the "Coffee Table: thread in this 6.7 PSD section. It will give you a good understanding of this engine. Best of luck to you, and don't let the grin on your face go away!!!!

Do replace the cold side pipe.
Do DEF and EGR delete if you're going to keep it. Before 100k if you aren't worried about voiding the warranty or after 100k if you are - AND - aren't worried about emissions testing.
Why wouldn't you if it makes the engine run more efficiently for mpg and power and no more DEF fluid, regen cycles, horrible mpg when in regen and really horrible mpg if towing and in a regen. Then there is the cost of replacement of the DEF system.

My opinions:
Do
Spend time learning the power delivery in M mode where you shift manually. When you figure out when the torque converter locks up you can hammer down and enjoy all that torque.
Run it hard and keep it hot.
Use 5/40 synthetic, covers all temp ranges and it's not expensive.
Don't
Worry about the dpf, when to change the oil, when to change the fuel filters - the truck will tell you when it needs attention.

Some people have problems with the intercooler pipe blowing off; I have not had this issue. I'm not going to replace it unless I need to. Time will tell.
The 2017 has an improved DEF tracking system...you have an electronic gauge. I never had a problem with the old system, though. It told you when you were going to start thinking about refilling.
I think you just need to worry about basic maintenance with this engine. I change the oil every 5k and dont use synthetic. I'll change the fuel filters at 15k. Occasionally drain the water separator. Use good fuel.

By the time "Time will tell" you could end up on the side of the road.
I had no problem with my intercooler pipe but I replaced it with an Ounce of Prevention part for piece of mind but mainly so I don't end up hurting my leg trying to kick myself in the **** on the side of the road.

I've seen the threads posted by Rodney and others showing the blown part. We've yet to see a 2017 blow its pipe, even though the questionable part appears to be the same as before.
Nevertheless, there has to be thousands of these things on the road with 100k+ miles still using the original pipe.
My uncle's 2011 6.7L F-550 dump still has the original plumbing and it has over 100k...I realize that C/C truck has a detuned engine, but this is just one example of probably tens of thousands of "original" trucks.

I think the intercooler pipe may be a concern depending on how many miles on average you tow, and although Ford says it won't leave on you on the side of the road, it seems most do blow out when towing, which then does leave you right there. About half my mile are tow miles, so needless to say I plan on changing mine sooner than later.
Since you are coming from a 6.0 you already know about the need to keep your diesel clean. I think that is the biggest issue with the 6.7 (and really any D). Keep that fuel oil happy, and you will be good!
