Hey gang, I haven't really kept up with the oil discussion because Ive been on a fresh oil change. We'll be leaving today towing the travel trailer. I'm running Rotella T6, in case I need to add a little what should I add? Ck4.. Cj4.. Any other brand besides Rotella T6 synthetic that's safe to run? Thanks
I got it at Walmart. I've always used T6 Synthetic but this is the first time I've seen the "extreme temperature" label. Like I said I was just looking for something in case I need to top it off but wasn't sure what was compatible.
It sounds like you're just interested in carrying "make-up oil" for your trip; I wouldn't be that concerned about branding or synthetic vs dino. Whether is CJ-4 or the new stuff, again, any oil is better than no oil.
Regarding the CK-4 and CJ-4 labeling on your bottle, I suppose that's true for all CK-4 oils as technically CK-4 meets or exceeds the previous standards.

Typically and previously that would be correct but there has been a lot of discussion over this new CK-4 and supposedly it is lacking some of the stuff that our engines are supposed to need. It's way out of my wheelhouse so all I can do is read and try to figure it out.

This a quarrel between Ford and the oil spec guys, and we're just caught in the middle. Whether it's directed more specifically at the 6.7PSD motors and not ours, I dunno. Frankly, I'm not all that concerned about it. Generally, a new oil spec is due to either new emissions standards or compatibility with new exotic materials in new engines, neither of which exist in our engines. There are plenty of oils out there that meet both the CK-4 spec and the new Ford spec, and that list will grow I suppose as more oil suppliers have their products tested for Ford standards.
Maybe the oil guys will consult with Ford before CL-4 comes out. Who knows, it's way above my paygrade..
Took the liberty of taking some pics at WalleyWorld of some oils I need to know which would be good to use I'm fast approaching an oil change and ran the last stack of the 15W40 Rotela.
Ford says they tested the new CK-4 oil and found excessive wear on powerstroke diesel engines due to low phosphorus content. I really only think that this applies to the 6.7L. I just can't see Ford bothering to go back and test every single diesel engine they made. Did they go back and test and old 6.9L IDI too?
I don't think that Ford's recommendation applies to our engines. However, that doesn't mean the new oil is any better or any worse. I don't think anyone has done any testing to find out, to be honest. I don't know if it's worth it to try and find oil that meets Ford's spec or not. I wish I had an inkling but I will probably just go with the T6 next time and hope for the best. I thought that we would have more oils on the market by now at retailers that meets the Ford spec. If you have a 6.7L it appears you can't buy oil at Wal-mart anymore.
I've just started running Triax oil. I've been impressed with it, the truck runs quieter and idles very smoothly. I plan to run it in my other vehicles too. There's a 20% discount if you spend $175, I bought a second 5w40 and a 5w30 for my Subaru & Jeep came out to $18.69/gallon.

FULL SYNTHETIC TRIAX FLEET 15W-40 CJ-4 Motor Oil ( 5 GALLON PAIL)
Need advice from an oil expert here online. Api lists trial 15w40 synthetic oil as meeting cj4, but only has 3 products listed on Api, none of which are 5w40. Does that mean those products don't meat the standard, or have they just not been submitted. It's a great deal, and I could run 15w40 here in California.
