transmission not shift

2000 v10 auto 4x4 Transmission started today not shifting gears Pull shifter in Drive and in will start out in first gear and shift to second at about 4000 rpm and then stay in second Any help Thanks in advanced ps about 225000 miles

it starts in gear? like if you turn key the truck trys to move? or just the indicator on the dash shows that its in gear when you start? if only the indicator shows then could be worn out linkage or corroded wires

The first step is to get the codes read. The places that read codes free cannot read these codes. You need either a good independent shop or a Ford dealer.
