03 Excursion 3rd gear shift problem
Purchased an 03 Excursion that was having transmission issues so I decided to grab one from the junk yard. Well that one has issues too, surprise surprise.
The problem has been when shifting into third gear. When you first turn the car on and start going it will shift through all gears with no issues. However, after the first stop sign you come to, it will not shift into 3rd gear. To force it to shift I can shift it into neutral, turn it off while going like 40mph, then turn it back on and shift back into drive. Then it will act fine and finish shifting through the rest of the gears.
I figured it may be the 2-3 upshift valve that is a common problem on these so I went ahead a replaced that today but its still acting the same way.
The fact that I can force it to shift by turning it off and on again almost makes me think it may be electrical like the solenoid pack. But Im tired of running around half cocked and getting no where fast. Please pass some knowledge my way. I could really use some of your guys's expertise. Thank you!
The place to start is to get the codes read. Auto parts stores do not have the right scan tool and CANNOT read Ford transmission codes. You need either a good independent shop or a Ford dealer.
When the OD light does flash I can read the code and it just says that there is a problem shifting from 2nd to 3rd. If the dealer can pull more descriptive codes then I'll have to try them. Thanks, for the response.
