transmission fluid change question

04 F350 with 6.0

The Haynes manual says this requires 17.7 quarts. Replacement says start with 6.5 quarts and then add a half quart at a time and shift through the gears at high idle.

Is this enough fluid to keep every thing lubed and not damage the transmission? Seems like it might not be enough.

Yeah that's about right for the drain/fill. IIRC mine took 8qts or a hair under with the original pan.

The only way you'll get 17 quarts out of the trans is if you remove the trans and tear it down.

I'd go ahead & drain that torque Converter also, get all of that old fluid out, it's not much harder since you'll be under it anyway, your quart count should go on up then but adding fluid slowly & checking it is Best from my experiences. Measure Twice, Cut Once!

How would you drain the torque converter? There is no drain plug.

The manual shows a drain plug on the torque converter.
