I have a 95 SWB 3.0l Aerostar. I'm planning on changing the trans fluid & filter this weekend. I already have the filter kit, but haven't bought the fluid yet. Anyone know the fluid capacity for a change? My Haynes manual doesn't mention it and the van didn't come with an owner's manual (bought used).
Also, is there a drain plug in the torque converter? I always prefer to drain them too, if I can. The van's gone 150,000 miles on what I am sure is the original fluid & filter, so I'd like to get as much of it out as possible. I haven't given it the sniff test, either, but at that mileage, I don't expect any more out of it.
WOW!! I was going to ask the same question. I plan on servicing mine this weekend to but since I won't be at work(with a 55 gallon drum of dextron) I have to do the quart deal as well. I'll check tommorow at work(can never seem to remember to check this stuff when working,LOL) and post when I get home.
Transmission pan holds about 3.5 to 4 quarts of fluid. There is no drain plug for the converter. Clean the mating edges REALLY well before lowering the pan to keep crud from falling into the pan on replacement.
Some dipsticks are tricky to read when adding fluid down the same tube. Be sure to recheck fluid level the following day after excess has drained out of tube and the visual on the dipstick is more accurate. A4LD systems are very sensitive to improper fluid levels, as little as 1/2 qt off can make a big difference in how it operates.

After you drain the ATF fluid, simply pour it from your drain pan into an empty quart oil bottle and measure how many bottles are needed. I concurr that it will be about 4 quarts.
