Engine removal question

Guys, I have a question on taking the engine out of my 79 F 250 4x4 with 400. Do you unbolt trans (NP435) at the bellhousing to motor or the 4 bolts where trans bolts to belhousing? Such a basic question but my searches came up empty. Also, how do you keep tranny propped up after engine is taken out? Thanks for any help.

To remove the engine, unbolt the bellhousing from the engine.

Prop up/support the trans/bell with a jack n dunnage.

Yep that's the way to do it.


Dunnage - you drive a truck? Only place I have heard that used.

Ratchet strap across the frame rails, or a floor jack and a 4" or 6" piece of post.

Getting ready to pull my engine as well and install my newly rebuilt 400. I have done some reading about checking the run-out to insure proper alignment between the bellhousing-crankshaft-transmission shaft. Is this important? I have a new clutch, will it be acceptable just to bolt the clutch to the flywheel and install, or do in need to pull the bellhousing and try to measure run-out? Didnt know how important that was with a NP435.

Back in the day I supervised the loading of my equipment on heavy lift/heavy cargo helicopters and C-141 Starlifters.
