We are trying to remove the engine from this vehicle. 1998 Chevy s10 blazer 4.3 V6 with 4X4. Its almost out but theres one thing holding us up. The tail shaft of the transmission is not allowing us to lower the engine/trans assy to gain access to remove some of the trans bell housing bolts to seperate the engine from the trans. Is there a way to remove this cross member for better access, or do we have to jack the body off the frame? We really dont want to do this so thats why im hoping someone out here has done this and knows of a simpler way to accomplish this!
I have never done it on a blazer, but I would think the cross member has bolts that can be removed to allow the tranny/transfer case to be lowered, just put a jack under the tranny so it doesn't fall after the cross member is removed. not sure how much more involved it would be on a blazer, but you might consider pulling the tranny and tcase with the engine.
I believe from seeing the truck shop guys at work working on the Co. 97 S-10 X-cab, that they had to jack up the body.........not sure how that translates over to the Blazer, but they are pretty much the same mechanically.
If you Google "s10 engine remove" there is plenty of info. One suggestion is that there is an access plate bolted to the floor. Another is to drop the trans crossmember until the dist nearly hits the firewall and use about 3 feet of extensions to get to the bolts. Also you may have to remove the oil pan to clear the axle. Lifting the body only seems to apply to manual trans trucks.
Good luck.
The crossmember is welded to the frame, found that out last weekend when we rebuilt the transmission in my sisters 1998 Blazer. You will need to remove the t-case, it's pretty light and you will lose some fluid as the coupler does contain some ATF. Once the t-case is out, the tranny will drop low enough to reach the top bolts with 2'-3' of ratchet extensions.
Yes the cross member is welded onto the frame. We looked for an inspection plate of some sort but this car dosent seem to have one. I tried the google searches, but that gave me all kinds of responses and nothing seemed to help. We'll remove the t-case and see how that goes, it looks like that will be the way to do it.
Finally got the engine out... boy what a pain in the butt!!! removing the transfer case made a big difference. After that we just wiggled and yanked the motor out!
Glad you got it, hopefully when the motor goes out in my sisters blazer, she will scrap the dang thing. I'm getting really tired of towing it home every month to fix it.
