Cracked Pitman Arm

So.. I'm cleaning up the chassis on my truck and come across this crack int he pitman arm. Is this bad?

Any advice on a good aftermarket Pitman arm for a 1974 F250 Highboy.

Wondering how I know the right one to order.

Appreciate any advice.

Yikes don't drive that anymore like that.

At least that one should be easy to get off.

Yes that's bad. And don't weld it either, through that thing in the garbage.

Also, this is a full view of the arm. It seems to only have a 1" drop which from what I can find online isn't stock for Highboy. Thoughts?

Ya my thoughts exactly and it does not look right. I wonder if a previous owner cobbled something together.

Regardless DO NOT DRIVE IT.

Thanks everyone. Yes I am lucky that didn't give at 50mph on the highway with my kids in the truck. The Prior Owner did have a new steering box put in so it's possible they installed the arm wrong. The ball join had a really hard angle on it just sitting flat.

Any suggestions on where to get a new one if these?

That's not a Highboy steering setup, looks like someone converted it to integral power steering. This is what the stock steering should look like, depending on being Bendix or Garrison:

Bendix (picture from Google):

Garrison (picture from Google):

I've never seen a Highboy with manual steering, but it should use the same box and pitman arm and just have a shaft in place of the valves.

I believe the split happened in 75. From what I can find, vins to T80,000 should have a Garrison valve and vins T80,001 and on should have the Bendix valve.

No that is not bad that is good, that you caught it before a catastrophe. I remember catching an un-tightened sector nut on a brand new 79 half ton 4x4 on a pre delivery I was doing. Good save and welcome to FTE! Check out this link if you can't find one local.

Thanks 77 and OldFord. Yeah, I agree. That moment when your working on your truck and you see something like this and reflect on the trailer with and 6000lbs of dirt you were hauling down the highway the day before.

Here is a pic of the power steering pump. I did a search on the part number on the top of the cover and found this thread

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/786709-p-s-box.html

but I'm not sure it helps me know what replacement arm I should be searching for. Will any arm for a Ford similar year fit the splines on the P/S box and Ball Joint?

If the steering box has three mounting bolts. It should be a half ton truck steering box. so an arm for one of those should work. It looks like the arm may have been heated and bent up. Normally the pitman arm slopes down on those boxes and gets real close to the spring when it cycles.

Thanks Moose. I feel like I am getting close. I'm guessing it's a Saginaw design? The box has 3 mounting bolts. Here is a pic. Also included dimensions on the arm. The Ball Joint end is a unique shape though. Found something close on this site.
