Question P/S Box

I have a P/S box in 72 F100 with a cooling line. My question is i have another P/S box that looks the same and want to rebuild it and exchange when i have front end off. The numbers i got off the one i want to rebuild is C7AR-3A587A those are up by the rag joint the other numbers are on the part that the pitman arm attaches to and they are C6AR 35 and under is 3580-A2. It says Ford on it. The one that is on frame was working but it was leaking. When i got the truck it came with extra P/S box. I haven't got to get the grime off to see the numbers are. I believe it has 5 bolts as the other one does too. I'd like to just be able to R and R after having the front off.

Walt, take a look at the top cover. A Saginaw box has 2 cover bolts and an adjusting screw in the middle. A Bendix box has 4 cover bolts and an adjusting screw in the middle. The Saginaw is the better design box. It was used and interchanges thru 79. Bendix boxes are very prone to leaks. The Bendix is a bolt in to replace a manual box. A Saginaw is larger and won't work with a manual steering column without shortening or replacing the column.

Those numbers only ID the parts they're marked on, they are not steering gearbox ID numbers.

For example: ID number C6AR-3580-A2 fits: 1965/2001 cars, 1969/1998 trucks!

Originally the Ford ID tag was bolted on the steering box cover, which is this 3580 number.

1971/72 F100/350 Ford P/S Gearbox ID tag number: SPA-R.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
F100/350's.
Bendix P/S was used 1966/68 and on 1969's thru serial # G30,000.
1969's after serial # G30,000 and 1970 thru 1998 (on some models, thru 1991 or others) are Ford P/S gearboxes.
The two seal kits are the same for all the Ford gearboxes, first introduced in 1965 on Galaxie/LTD's.
D7AZ3E501B .. Sector Shaft Seal Kit. (D7AZ-B replaced: D3AZ-A & C5AZ-A)
F3AZ3E502A .. Input Shaft Seal Kit (F3AZ-A replaced: D7AZ-A; D3AZ-A & C5AZ-A)
Resealing these gearboxes IMO, is a waste of time and money.
Actually rebuilding one will be very tough, because...
There are very few to none of the internal parts available anywhere new.
You cannot find the specific spool valves for these gearboxes anymore, as no one sells them new. The last retail price was over $300.00!
When you buy a "rebuilt" P/S gearbox at an autoparts store, the only thing 'rebuilt' about it....is....the seals, snap rings and washers, all of which come in the seal kits.
You'd be far better off to go here redheadsteeringgears.com and get one of their gearboxes.
Read what they say about them, and what they do to fix the flaw that all these Ford gearboxes have, which causes them to start leaking (AGAIN!) after only a few years.
Ford P/S Gearbox. SPA-R = 1971/72 F100/350.
This box uses the same two seal kits that are listed in post #3.
Just an FYI, you also need a shorter steering shaft to run the Bendix PS box when replacing a manual box. NumberDummy saved me on this one. Thanks to him, I learned that the steering shaft in my 68 F100 Ranger parts truck (original Bendix PS truck) would interchange with my '66 (orig manual steer truck). I simply put the shorter PS shaft into my '66 column and it worked perfectly. So if you have a manual steer truck, the Bendix isn't exactly a bolt-in. Bill, did the 69 power steering trucks with the Ford box use the same steering shafts as the 68's with the Bendix box?
Nope.
Bendix P/S: 1966/68 F100/250 and 1969 F100/250 before serial number D96,001.
C6TZ3524M .. Steering Shaft / 34 15/16" long / Use with Bendix P/S / Flange has (1) 1/2" slot, (1) 3/4" slot / Fits: 1966/68 F100/250.
C9TZ3524B .. Steering Shaft - 34 15/16" long / Use with Bendix P/S / Flange has (2) 3/4" slots / Fits: 1969 F100/250.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ford P/S: 1969 F100/350 from serial number D96,001 and 1970/72 F100/350.
C9TZ3524C .. Steering Shaft - 32 7/8" long / Use with Ford P/S / Fits: 1969/72 F100/350.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
F350's were not available with P/S until 1969...from serial number D96,001, which means all have Ford P/S.
I resealed my box in my 71, it was easy so if your box works other than leaking you might want to just try resealing it.
Why would you need the spline count?
The Ford/Saginaw P/S steering shaft is different 1969/70 vs. 1971/72. But the steering coupler (rag joint) is the same.
I'm taking the rag coupler off and replacing it with a universal joint that goes from 3/4"-36 to 1"DD....Directly to my aftermarket steering column with the "1DD end.
I needed to know which size spline universal joint to buy
Sorry, cannot help you, parts catalog doesn't list the spline info.
are you saying that if you use the Saginaw steering box you do not need to change out the steering column for a shorter one. I have the 1977 Saginaw power steering box and I am changing to power steering from manual on a 69.
