I'm doing my first Oil change in my 2015 6.7, in my gas vehicles I have always used Mobil 1, changing the filter every 5K and the oil every 10k. But according to the Mobil website it doesn't recommend its oil in this engine. I see that the Rotella T6 is the most popular. What interval do you change it?
Welcome to FTE, lots of threads and topics about oil use and which one is best. You can spend a lot of time looking through old posts with recommendations and why you should use one vs the other.
That said, there have been recent recommendation (December 2016) from Ford about oils that must meet their new WSS-M2C171-F1 requirements. This affects many oil brands that use a new rating of CK-4. Oils such as Shell Rotellta T6 (CK-4 ) do not meet this requirement. Previous blends of T6 that were labeled CJ-4 did meet, but with this new change, I think most people will now be sticking to oils that are only in the WSS-M2C171-F1.
I have used T6 in the past with great success, but for my next change I do plan on using the Valvoline PBE 5W-40 instead, it is a CK-4 oil on the Ford approved list. Shell has said that at some point their CK-4 will make it to the list, but until that occurs, I will use something else.
Oh, and welcome to the forms, and have fun with your oil change!
It's recommended to use an oil on that list, especially if still under warranty. I personally use the Valvoline PBE 5W-40. It can be found at NAPA for a decent price on sale. Amazon has it for about the same as NAPA's sale price.
- Use an oil that meets the old CJ-4 spec, or the new Ford WSS-M2C171-F1 spec.
- Use Motorcraft filters and change with each oil change.
- Change the oil when the truck tells you.
That works for most people out there. If you have extended idle time or some other kind of special use, then your oil change intervals may happen before the driver information display tells you to change the oil.

Don't you think the intelligent oil life monitor would take this into account and factor it into its decision to tell you when to change it?

For heavy idle times, no it doesn't do a very good job at all.
But we're talking about a very small percentage of trucks, mostly limited to certain fleets. For the average owner or even hard use owner, the OLM is just fine.
Once you get to changing the filter, save yourself a mess, and place a container under the filter, then poke a hole in the bottom and one in the side of the filter. Let it drain before removing it.
And what these other guys said about oil choice is good advice. Also, the rotella dino and T-5 synthetic blend are on the approved list.
I can't seem to make myself wait for the oil life meter. I tried once and only made it to 6k miles before I couldn't stand it anymore. I'm a 5k mile oil change guy. Nothing against those who wait for the truck to tell them. Wish I could but I just can't. I'm sick that way.
- Use an oil that meets the old CJ-4 spec, or the new Ford WSS-M2C171-F1 spec.
Be careful with the CJ-4 Spec. If the API circle has both CJ-4 and CK-4 the oil may not necessarily meet Ford's recommendation. Go with Ford WSS-M2C171-F1.
Or you can use the Motorcraft Super Duty oil that is usually available at Walmart or local big box car part stores in 5 gallon containers. I run Motorcraft 10w30.
Good info these guys are giving you, esp. about the factory bulletin on the new CK oils. I'm a big advocate of synthetic oil also, but I'm going to continue to use the factory dino while under warranty with my first 2 oil changes done at dealer at 5k miles each.
I don't have a camper yet and will probably consider going to full synthetic when I do. I'm trying out the Archoil AR9100 oil additive and will take this current oil out past 5k miles. Truck is at just over 11k now.
I will have to remember to check my coolant at 15k miles though...
I used Rotella T6 until my last oil change, switched to Motorcraft 15w40 in my '15 F-450. Easy enough to get at WM. If and when T6 meets the Ford spec I'll change back to it.
The OP asked about using Mobil 1, and I myself was in the same place when I bought my diesel. I have used Mobil 1 for 15+ years in my gas cars, and still do in my Crown Vic. I too was surprised they do not make a Diesel 5w 40, and like many other have happily used the T6 oil (and like others will be switching until the CK-4 stuff is resolved).
Oddly... I was at a place called BiMart yesterday (semi-local mixed goods discount store) and I found on the shelf Mobil 1 5w 40 Diesel oil. It's CJ4, doesn't say anything about thew new ford Spec, but since it is CJ4 it should matter. Never seen this, and I cannot even find it referenced on Mobil's website, digging I found it eventually on their site, but they do not even have much info about it.
I was surprised to see it is just CJ-4, I think I may have just found some old oil. Did some more digging and found the newer version which is indeed CK-4, that's probably why Mobil 1's website says there is no current oil for our engine.
