I was just checking out the 2018 F150 and neat option to have the trailer backing ****. Any thoughts that the 18 SD might get that? Or other upgrades. Planning to order a 17 this week if not.
Probably not. The f150s have electric assist rack an pinion steering which is much lighter allowing the park assist and trailer assist to steer the truck that's just my guess tho
I would have a hard time relinquishing control of my vehicle while backing up. I guess I'm too old school for that but it seems pretty dicey to me, especially for some of the locations we deliver to. Tight driveways, culverts, mailboxes, trees... I'd be afraid of tearing up the front as much as backing into something.
I'm old school, I guess. If you can't back a trailer without nanny assist, you likely should not be towing. Though it is better than watching the poor guy/gal at the boat launch who can't back-down a ramp....especially when 4 or 5 other rigs are waiting...painful to witness.
That being said, the new cameras that assist with lining-up the hitch are welcome technology.....though the old way of jumping in and out of the truck cab to check alignment was decent exercise........
I thought I heard or read somewhere that an engineer at Ford talked about that feature not coming to the SD at all. The reasoning was the 1/2 users are more your weekend warriors, towing sparingly, and may not be very proficient at reversing. The typical SD drivers are far more familiar with maneuvering a trailer.

Agreed. Although sometimes backing prowess can lead to arrogance that can bite you in the ****. The first time I backed my 102" wide trailer up the ramp and into my customers dark warehouse through their 120" opening I almost got an unpleasant surprise. I had done this numerous times with our dually flat bed but didn't think about the very expensive tail gate on my pickup. If there was a bug on there he may have been squashed...
I have Trailer Backup Assist on my current 2016 F150 Platinum. With a 36'9" Travel Trailer (hence why I have an F350 on order) I tried it once, and hate it. You think turning the wheel in the opposite direction that you want your trailer to go isn't logical...IMO this makes even less sense, and just isn't natural to me. I felt like it was more of a cool feature for Ford to market and sell more trucks, than it was useful...although I'm sure some would argue. It's one feature I wont miss when I sell my F150 soon though...
I drove a wrecker truck in the Army......I have more towing and backing stories than I care to recall......backing a trailer or towed vehicle is an acquired skill, absolutely.
Just to be clear, my original post was about helping out my wife. I pull a boat to the ocean a lot and I have to "do it all" from backing the boat in to getting the in the boat and pulling it around to parking the truck and trailer.
So it has nothing to do with being good or bad at backing a trailer as a man, LOL.
