1979 f250

Hey guys was wondering what you did for an exhaust on your 460s also was wondering what's the simplest system to in stall such as y pipe. Etc thanks in advance

Go with a dual exhaust system, v8s with any respectable performance need one. 2.5" is big enough to support most mild street engines while 3-4" can be used on racing engines. Back pressure is not your friend. Headers are also a good choice is you want to make good power. L&L makes a nice set that will last a long time and flow well, my dad used them on a 78 mud truck with a 466.

I'm in the middle of a 460 swap in a '75 F250. From virtually everyone I have talked to or read about that does the 460s, it unanimous that the 385s need exhaust flow help to make them breathe right. Headers are a must, mild exhaust porting is pretty close to just as important, and dual exhaust just like 78puller laid out is very highly recommended. The details beyond that depend a lot on personal taste for sound/brands, and where the engine will live with RPM and power band.

Mine lives in low RPM torque, ported and headered, and being made to be subtle in sound, so the bit of back pressure and silencing from adding cats into the mix is expected to improve the low end power and reduced noise. I don't think they would do any good for something made to operate higher in the RPM band, and you may want a loud motor.

For simple, maybe go with headers and straight pipes all the way back. I've watched hundreds of YouTube clips on 460 truck exhausts, folks do that, and it sounds good. Just add mufflers to taste. Turndowns after mufflers look simple too. Y-pipes on a 460 seem like the kind of thing people would look at and wrinkle their whole face in confusion, unless it were on a Bronco. Kinda like the face I get when speaking such heresy as adding cats!
