I have some questions that I need to get answered. I have searched the forum and didnt find the answers and of course the chilton manual has all of 3 pages about the transmission. Sheesh so here goes.
I own a 88 aerostar with the A4LD. The transmission went bad and I got a replacement from a junkyard. The transmission runs and shifts fine after adjusting the tv cable but here are my two main problems.
My first problem was that the electical plug for the torque converter lock on my aerostar is a 3 prong plug. On the replacement transmission it is only 2 prong. I cant find anywhere that gives me a wiring diagram to be able to tell which two wires I need to use. I am not really worried about the lockup. Its running fine without it and unless I can get a definate answer Im not going to worry about it.
My main problem is my TV cable. The aerostar tv cable hooks to the gas pedal. When I adjust the cable to the right length and everything is shifting correctly, when I push the pedal all the way to the floor it actually pulls the cable adjustment out too much. In other words when I have the adjuster set it pulls the adjuster out to a different setting. It acts like the cable is too short. I have replaced it with another aeorostar cable and still does the same. My only conclusion is that perhaps the replacement transmission came out of an automobile that the tv cable hooks to the throttle body/carb and the travel/angle/lenght of the lever on the transmission is different. Any help would be appreciated.
The ATSG manual lists that the 85-87 only had the TCC clutch solenoid and not the 3-4 shift solenoid. You might be able to get away with that. If you give me a week, I can probably get you the connector position/wire color for the TCC.
The 88 a4ld does't have a TV cable. The cale you are adjusting is the kickdown cable and you are adjusting it correctly. What you describe is the proper way to adjust the kickdown cable.
I just got it out of the transmission shop. The front seal got pushed out by the bearing. The guy explained to me about it just being a kick down cable. That makes things alot clearer. I was trying to figure out what the vacume lines were for when I put it in but the manual dosent say anything about a modulater valve or any kind of vacumme lines. I have it up and running now and everything seems to be running fine.
There is only on line that runs down to the modulator. It runs from the intake manifold and goes down the firewall to the right side of the tranny.
If you look up behind the catalytic converters there will be a round part that has a vacuum line on it. It is held on with one bolt and bracket. This is the vacuum modulator.
This helps with the shifting points and usually has a torn diaphragm. If it is torn there will be ATF in the lines. Change it now so you won't have to worry about it for a while.
