One important advantage that the diesel has over gas engine is exhaust brake.
Gasoline engines have don't need an "exhaust brake" as they naturally offer excellent engine braking because of the butterfly in the throttle body. With the tow/haul mode engaged (torque converter locked, automatic downshifts to hold speed) the engine braking with a gasoline engine is outstanding.
