Looking at a used 1997 F250 HD, 7.5 Gasser, 4.10 Rear with Row & Go Transmission. Truck is extended cab model. I know the history on this thing since new since its in the family. I need a truck that I can leave at a remote location for use at least monthly to tow.
Here's the question. The truck manual indicates with the above setup the max tow capacity is 10,400 lbs. Same truck with diesel/automatic can handle 13,800 lbs.
Obviously the truck frame/wheels/brakes etc on the gasser are equal to the diesel. Who thinks the gas engine could actually tow in the 12,000lbs category w/o much trouble?
you've got to figure that the 460 isn't far behind in power compared to a similiar year diesel. the difference probably comes from the age old manual vs automatic. I'de say go for it.
In the manual for my 96, extended cab, 460 automatic, it says 12,500, as we can see the GCW ratings have more to do with pulling ability than weight handling ability. And if you did modifications to increase the Hp of the 460 to say 500 hp, the diesel would have a hard time keeping up with it. And besides the GVW of the truck with a diesel is lower because the engine is much heavier.
